Some time ago I visited a museum in Caracas, the capital city of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and I came across a poster that gave me much to think about the resilience and particular sense of humor of the population. For context, there is a nice little cafe in the museum that sells traditional sweets and also prepares coffee, both espresso and its many other presentations customary in this tropical American country. Already at that time, the lack of food and articles of common use in daily life were being felt, not as serious as today, but they were present and were increasing their effect on the degradation of the quality of life of the population . Therefore, it was not unusual to find that on some occasions, pre-prepared food outlets simply took dishes off their regular menu, because they could not find the ingredients or could not buy them at the prices that the vendors offered them. Returning to the cafeteria theme, what I found was a sign that read: "Good coffee doesn't need sugar. Bad coffee doesn't deserve sugar." That sign was the cafeteria management's very discreet and somewhat clever way of warning they were sugar-free. Why didn't they just say there was no sugar? Well, I have to clarify that museums are institutions dependent on State institutions, which in the case of Venezuela is usually extremely subordinate to the Government of the day, so there is always the threat that if there is any action or message that does not is in accordance with the lines of the party or of its 'supreme, eternal and all-powerful' leaders, then one can be dismissed from the work permit, or in extreme cases it can be the cause of ordering the arrest for a crime or sending groups Paramilitaries at the service of the Party. In past decades it was joked that in the governments of the last century they were the 'Cabilleros', so called for using pieces of steel rods as concussion weapons, and now in the Social Revolution of the XXI Century they are the 'Collectives', who can come with firearms, various white weapons and on occasions accompanied and openly supported by police and military forces. Resilience then ... after all it is about survival and that word defines it quite well, while the ability to survive and cope with the pain of losses and adverse conditions is something fundamental to be able to endure a little more, always with the desperate hope that things might get better at some point. |
Hace algún tiempo visité un museo en Caracas, ciudad capital de la República Bolivariana de Venezuela, y me encontré con un cartel que me dio mucho para pensar sobre la resiliencia y el sentido de humor particular de la población. Para dar contexto, en el museo hay una pequeña y agradable cafetería que vende dulces tradicionales y también prepara café, tanto expresos como sus muchas otras presentaciones acostumbradas en este país americano tropical. Ya en esa época, la carencia de alimentos y artículos de uso común en la vida cotidiana se estaban sintiendo, no tan graves como en la actualidad, pero si estaban presentes y estaban incrementando su efecto en la degradación de la calidad de vida de la población. Por ello, no era extraño encontrar que en algunas ocasiones los locales de ventas de comidas preparadas simplemente sacaran platos de su menú habitual, porque no podían encontrar los ingredientes o no podían comprarlos a los precios que los vendedores los ofrecían. Regresando al tema de la cafetería, lo que me encontré fue un cartel que decía: "Un buen café no necesita azúcar. Un mal café no merece azúcar." Ese cartel era la manera muy discreta y un tanto ingeniosa de la administración de la cafetería de advertir que no tenían azúcar. ¿Por qué no decían simplemente que no había azúcar? Pues, tengo que aclarar que los museos son instituciones dependientes de instituciones del Estado, que en el caso de Venezuela se suele ver extremadamente supeditado al Gobierno de turno, por lo que siempre se tiene la amenaza de que si hay alguna acción o mensaje que no esté acorde con las líneas del partido o de sus dirigentes 'supremos, eternos y todopoderosos', entonces se puede uno ir despidiendo del permiso de trabajo, o en casos extremos puede ser causa de que ordenen la detención por algún delito o que envíen a Grupos Paramilitares al servicio del Partido. En décadas pasadas se bromeaba que en los gobiernos del siglo pasado eran los 'Cabilleros', llamados así por usar trozos de cabillas de acero como armas de contusión, y ahora en la Revolución Socialista del Siglo XXI son los 'Colectivos', que pueden venir con armas de fuego, armas blancas diversas y en ocasiones acompañados y apoyados abiertamente con cuerpos policiales y militares. Resiliencia entonces... después de todo se trata de sobrevivir y esa palabra lo define bastante bien, en tanto que la capacidad de sobrevivir y sobrellevar el dolor de perdidas y de condiciones adversas es algo fundamental para poder aguantar un poco mas, siempre con la desesperada esperanza de que las cosas en algún momento puede que mejoren. |
