Ketamin - A solution for the depressed patient to control suicidal action !

Ketamine is a drug, or a medication which is primarily used as an anesthetic. This offers a rate of fast and effective way in reducing the suicidal thoughts, thoughts evolved in the individual suffering from depression. This remedy was introduced and researched by the team of researchers from Columbia University Medical Center located in the New York, NY.

Suicide has been the 10th leading cause for death in the United States . Around a number of 44,200 people in U.S take their own lives each year. Around 494,160 people become hospitalize by harming self and making certain kind of injuries.

Depression is one and major cause for suicidal thoughts and action to it. This is a major common disorder underlying suicidal attempt. Approximately 30-75% of people who are on the verge of suicidal attempts have a major depression or some kind of bipolar disorder.

But, it isn't possible to predict the patient will commit suicide or not. So, people with these thoughts needs to be treated by speaking softly and speedy treatments which can reduce and eradicate the thoughts of suicide or suicidal thoughts. According to the researcher of psychiatrist at Columbia University MEdical center tells that ...

" There is a phase or critical window period in which the patient suffering from depression who are suicidal needs some kind of treatment. The treatment is a speedy treatment and prevent the self-harm to the patient".

There are some kind of medications that currently available called as "anti-depressants". These drugs mainly reduce the suicidal thoughts occurring in the patient of depression. This can take into effect only after taking the drug for a week. It doesn't come in action as soon as you take them. The patient needs some support and make them entertained. The researcher Dr.Grunebaum tells that " Patient having some kind of suicidal thoughts and depressed need treatments that comes in action rapidly and effectively in reducing the thoughts related to the suicide when it comes to the highest peak of committing it. But, now there is no such drug or treatment that can rapidly relief the suicidal thoughts in depressed patient who tries to commit it.

When some previous researchers were carried out, the researchers found out that the ketamine which is a potential drug that can come in action. After certain findings, the claimed that the low doze of this ketamine drug can help in reducing the suicidal attempt. This can also make the patient lower his progression to the depression. They found out that this ketamine drug can reduce some effect of depression and reduced the thoughts of suicidal attempts by the patient within 24 hours of administration.

The experiment was carried out. This experiment was done in about 80 adults who suffer from major depression. These people had some kind of suicidal thoughts when determined by the scale or score on thr SSI(Scale for Suicidal Ideation).The experiment continued by making two groups:

One group provided with certain low-dose of ketamine, while the other group received a low-dose of sedative drug (Midazolam). After the administration of drug, the researchers were followed up upon these patient for the thoughts on suicidal attempts. After some readings, they concluded that the both the groups were significantly reducing their mental thoughts on the suicidal attempts. But, this reduced more in the patient who was administered with the ketamine drug. Around 55% of the people receiving ketamine drug had reduced their mental thoughts on suicidal attempts about 50% comparing with the patients receiving midazolam group with 30% reduction on thoughts.

The researchers report that the people who had ketamine drug reduced their thought for about 6 weeks. The patients developed further their mood, reduced depression and fatigue in their muscle. All these reduced compared with the people with administering midazolam drug.

Reported told that this drug effect accounted for the people around third of the drug effects on the Scale of Suicidal Ideation. This even suggests that the ketamine drug can directly change the mood and depression level to normal making the thoughts of suicidal attempts lower.

There are certain side effects on using this drug...

Prollly, it increases the blood pressure, which is the outward force generated by the blood in the arteries. But, this researcher team notes that this pressure can be lowered in any minute with some medication. So, team tells that Ketamine is a drug that promises to act rapidly and reduce the suicidal thoughts in the patients suffering from depression case.

So, without the available treatments which cannot be responded by the patient has a second chance in using this rapidly acting, subsiding suicidal thoughts antidepressant drug called Ketamine.
