I recently acquired the Gold Foil Archmage Arius from @raynie.. 1 of only 2 in existence, gaining me 50% of the whole current supply. The other Archmage is owned by @j6969, who purchased his from @vcdragon for $800.

When you watch a concept go from scratch to a viable product in just a few months and then continue to push developments and expand and respond in a measured and reasonable way to the cryptomaniac organism that is the player base well... you have something.
So thanks @yabapmatt and @aggroed for making a great product and crippling my productivity.
The fundamental reasons for this bolt-on investment to my primary investment in the game (the gold foil alpha lightning dragons) is very simple.
After inserting my unsolicited opinion in the discord chat a few times about what I thought an ultra rare card could do for the game, (which was met with a lot of resistance for some reason) I put it into “product suggestions” several months ago:
^this is super blurry, but the gist is that I suggested an ultra rare card (like 1 in existence) on 02\22\19 which can be found in discord.
While im sure the creation of the Archmage has nothing to do with my suggestion, I was serious when I said I would try to buy such a card if I could.... and I did.
It’s the scarcity of the card that make me willing to exchange all that STEEM. While STEEM continues to inflate and dilute everyone every day at a more rapid pace than the growth of the chain, the archmage is surely to inflate slower than the player base of Splinterlands.
While It is certain that there will be more gold Archmages which will dilute my stake in him significantly, I am reasonable confident that it will still be the rarest card in the game.
It will be almost impossible to get this card. In fact, you already can’t get it because there are none for sale. The only way to get the card is to be very very
through the mystery gift daily reward.
Cornering a market, even in a digital card game has been an effective strategy. Most players know that @mattclarke is famously doing this with the Flesh Golem, and it has affected the price, just like my investment has affect the alpha gold LD’S.
So to summarize the reasons for this specific investment:
1.Proof of brain (proof of game) has already been established with @yabapmatt and @aggroed
2.Card scarcity in a game with rising popularity
3.Opportunity to corner another market.
Plus.... I really REALLY like gold.

I've been thinking recently how my crypto heroes are getting more and more accessible.
Satoshi was an enigma.
Ned and Dan had identities but were largely unapproachable.
Now Aggroed and Yaba. Obviously if things get crazy they'll become less accessible over time, just for logistical reasons; but they've been incredibly helpful and responsive from the get-go.

Yeah I try to make things as easy as possible so I’m trying to go with a very low number of highly value dense cards. Its probably because im lazy\efficient (lazcient?)
I have this theory that decentralization is overrated but I was scared to say it out loud here before hiring the archmage as my bodyguard. Sometimes I think the guys listen TOO much to all the 2k+ opinions of the player base and it becomes a bit of a distraction. Despite this, I still think they are still doing an awesome job obviously.
I should write a post on it....

Yes! Thats the exact same analysis I did before I bought him. As with any speculative investment, you must be prepared for catastrophic failure or a quadruple or more.

It's all good. These valuable cards are nice, but they're not very liquid. I've been trying to sell it so I can power up more. I'm considering leasing it, but I haven't done that before. Something to look into. :)
So true. Illiquidity for sure a drawback for investment . Hopefully as the player base expands this gets better :)
I think the market is rather saturated right now. The people who need cards have already gotten them. As new players continue to join, they'll be needing cards though, and that's where I think we'll see a whole new wave of cards being bought (at a profit too!).
Agreed. And we have seen what just 1 whale can do for the game (mr. 69) . Imagine the excitement that could be created by just 5 or 6 more
I haven't heard of him, but yeah a few whales could really change things up around here. I wouldn't be surprised if a few sign up as the exposure for the game continues to increase. And since there's always new stuff getting added to the game, it's still exciting.

Damn that's one pricey card! But as you said an investment in both the game and the boys.
They have done such an amazing job so far, and the game is yet to explode IMO. I think once the app launches we will see another wave of people join and prices of alpha and beta rise even more. in fact, I highly doubt there will be any beta left come the release of the app
I also believe the price of that card could be sold for more at a later stage, if you ever chose to... But it would be awesome to be the owner of the rarest card in the game!

I can understand why your going that direction. I wish I had bought more back in the PRE DEC days. I was on fence about buying more but decided to go other directions at the time. If Beta packs sell out, and they don't release the next set, I can't imagine what will happen in the market. There is always a rush for maxed gold cards - more DEC, more wins, more growth and ROI.
I agree with investing in people. In my darkest days of thinking STEEM was going to fail, I just looked at what they were able to create and it showed me STEEM can't fail as long as smart people like them are out there working for a better STEEM

I agree. There is so much brain power behind these projects it’s hard to believe they arent going to come up with solutions to stuff, which I think they are already doing.
I am actually more bullish on steem than I made it seem in the article, for the same reasons essentially. I think @elipowell is solid
