Mindful Monday - The Power of Kindness...

in #mindfulmonday6 years ago (edited)

It's funny how the young kids I work with like to be super heroes or characters like Elsa from the movie "Frozen". I ask them what they like about these characters and it's usually the special powers that they have. Here's where I try to let them see that they too have powers and they look at me weird!

I say they have the power to make me smile and sometimes I'll mention about the buckets we all carry and how our speech and actions towards people can either fill their buckets or empty them. We might even read one of the "Bucket" books (A series of books on topics including this fill or empty buckets idea.)

Or I may say you have the power of kindness and go on to explain how being kind to someone can really affect them and ask them how they feel when someone has been kind to them.

Can you remember the last time somebody was kind to you? Or when you were kind to someone else? Do you remember their reaction?

Kindness leaves a lasting impression on both the user and the experiencer.

We may not often think of kindness or the profound effect it can have on the world around us. Kindness is in fact, often underrated and disregarded - not many people see it as a power!

In this fast-paced world, kindness and compassion often take a back seat to things like selfies and self-interest.

Many people today are so absorbed in their own life that they often forget how powerful being kind to others can be.

But kindness can be considered as one of the essentials to our existence. From birth we are nurtured in kindness. Therefore, kindness is a part of our DNA.

So what is kindness, anyway?

According to Psychology Today,

Kindness means a behavioral response of compassion and actions that are selfless; or a mindset that places compassion for others before one’s own interests.

Kindness is the ways both big and small, that we express compassion, concern, consideration and care for ourselves and others. Kindness transcends race, religion, social class and language barriers.

Being kind has a big impact on the world around us and on ourselves in ways that most don’t realize.

You probably don’t even realize that you may be performing many kindnesses every day. Simple things like smiling and greeting others in a friendly way, complimenting someone about their outfit, laugh or something they do are acts of kindness.

Helping someone in some way, opening a door or saying thank you, please or excuse me are kind and considerate acts. It shows kindness when you don’t gossip, find fault in others or make negative judgements either.

Take a look at your life and see how you can be more kind and how to give and receive kindness. See what different types of kindness you may have and start to exercise your Power of Kindness

Another of your Monday posts that I absolutely adore! Too fun that we were on the same wavelength this week, or perhaps my niece was channeling some of your energy. ;) Kindness truly is a super power. One small act can totally change someone's day. I love that you mentioned receiving, as well. Sometimes we tend to brush off a compliment or don't acknowledge someone's smile. It can be just as important to be a conscious recipient of kindness as well as a giver!

"Practice random acts of kindness and senseless beauty."

The idea has stayed with me all these years and resonates still.

Very true! I know when I'm in a less-than-positive mood, sometimes all it takes is doing something nice for a stranger to pop right out of it. It can be as simple as holding a door open and getting a smile, or just smiling at someone. It starts with each of us!

@porters you have a wonderful way of looking at things and turning them positive. I love how you took something that kids are in awe of and made it very practical.

This is something I think about when I’m out and about. It is not difficult to smile and be nice to people.

Once I was told by someone how much my smile meant to them. I was dumbfounded and amazed that it mattered so much! Since then I have been very mindful about what I am putting out into the population!

Being kind costs nothing, a smile and cheerful greeting makes both you and the other person feel better.

Such a good reminder to be positive, share the feeling it is contagious.
