Why are most talented people poor? They focus on the wrong thing.

Do you want more money?

What is the specification you are mostly looking for when applying for a job?
Money? That's what most people are looking for. They want money. But that's not always the smartest move, especially for young people.

As a young professional you should be looking for a job which will teach you important lessons for your futher development. The salary is not that important in the beginning. You should first choose and develop the skills you want to have.

If you are into the "I want more money" category, then there's a big chance you will end up in the "rat race" as Robert Kiyosaki calls it.

What's the rat race?

Well, that's the frustrating hard-to-break financial lifestyle. Where you have a time-consuming 9 to 5 job, you have to pay rents, mortgages, bills, credits and that's where the biggest part of your salary goes. You don't have much choice, but to work as much as possible.

Hopefully, that's not at all what you want. Now, ask yourselfthe questions:
Where will my current daily activities take me?
What am I spending most time on?
Is it the tasks that will lure me into the rat race trap?

There are those people that do nothing to improve their skills. And then there are those that are working their asses off. But is it worth it? Are they going the right things? If you are spending more than 50-60 hours a week doing a job that doesn't contribute to your end goal and is not helping you develop the skills you need - you are wasting your time.
Yes, we need to somehow make a living, but let's not concentrate on maximizing the profit on the account of wasted time or on learning skills that are not a priority.

Are you developing the right skills?

Remember, the world is full of poor, but talented people.
Many of those talented people are focusing on improving their technical skills, instead of improving their sales skills that would help them sell themselves better or sell what they can currently offer.

For example, the company McDonalds doesn't make the best burgers in the world, but it's the best in selling average burgers.

Moreover, if you have specialized too deep in a technical field you will be very dependent from it. Especially with the technology innovations, there's a big chance many jobs will get replaced by robots. To avoid this, you shouldn't specialize only in one narrow field, but rather study all of the fields in the business ecosystem. Learn how things work. Doing this you will have a general perspective of the operations in a functioning profitable business and you will be able to identify the connection between the different departments.

So, how to apply this?

First, it's up to you to identify the key skills you want to develop. For example, you want to develop a mobile application and to have it as a main business. So what skills would you need?

  • All the technical knowledge required to build it
  • How to sell it
  • How to pitch to investors?
  • And other...

Let's say that you are afraid that people are rude to you and will reject you. You want to get better at communication and handling customers. Well, that's a great opportunity! You can start in a sales department as a sales person. You might not get the best salary, but with some training and coaching you will develop the skills needed to achieve your goals. You will become more confident and outgoing. You will be able to sell, and that's a very important trait in most of the succesfull people.

So, don't work for money, work for the skills you will acquire.
Ask yourself the right questions. Focus on bettering your skills, that are required for your success.
