Motivation

It's at tricky thing isn't it, one day you feel like you could fight a bear and the next day you feel like you'd get beaten by a squirrel, motivation is a state of being most people think they need to "get in to" before doing anything but motivation is something you can have as a baseline everyday if you want to you just have to make it happen.

So how do you stay motivated even when thing's are going badly? i would say it's easy because it's easy for me, but for some of you out there it probably isn't so here are some of my tips and tricks for staying consistently motivated in your life.

1. Everybody fails eventually.

This is a big one i see from people, they hit a setback and immediately want to crawl into bed and hide from the world, failures in your life happen often, nobody succeeds 100% of the time, but you fail 100% of the things you don't strive to achieve.

For example, the Harry potter book series was initially rejected 12 times from publishers with many of them telling JK Rowling that writing wasn't her thing, a few years later and Harry Potter is now the most known book series in the world as well as being the best selling series of all time, imagine if JK rowling gave up after the 7th or 8th rejection?

Failure is crucial to success as if you never fail you will never see your own downfalls and will never learn from them, failure breeds excellence and motivates one to push even harder to achieve their goals, just because you failed today doesn't mean you will fail tomorrow.

Understanding that everyone fails at what they do eventually is incredibly liberating to someone who has had a few failures in their life and are feeling downtrodden remember, you can fail 1000 times but you only need to be successful once.

2. Happiness layering.

Happiness layering or "Borrowed happiness" is a technique used in NLP(Neuro-linguistic programming) that can make you incredibly motivated and happy in an instant, the technique itself is rather easy to do and can be repeated infinitely every day, so how do you do it? i'll give you an example.

Today i'm going down the shops as it's payday and every time i go there i get a burger at a little cafe near it, i love these god damned burgers, i really do, and by being mindful of it and thinking about how much i'm going to enjoy that burger when I get it i can already emulate the happiness i'll feel when i actually do get one.

This can be used with everything in life, excited about getting to watch a new episode of your favorite TV show later tonight? why wait to be happy? be happy about it right now get happier and happier as the minutes and hours count down towards it, there's no point waiting to be happy when you can do it right now, take stock of the things you're happy and feel great about that are in your life at this moment and all the things you're going to accomplish or receive in the future.

3. Take randomness out of the equation.

Wanting to succeed is a primal drive however success can often rely on many different things, timing, resources, locations etc etc. so why not take all of that away and succeed at something now.

Sometimes you just can't catch a break at what you're trying to achieve so why not do something you can 100% achieve right now to give you a little boost? whenever i'm having a hard time with something or something didn't go my way I do something i know i can win at even if it's just making food or playing a video game or hell even just having a cigarette, small victories can turn a losing streak into a winning streak very quickly.

Wars aren't won in one monumental battle, they're achieve through hundreds and thousand of little skirmishes and success is no different, if you aren't motivated to succeed you won't so take everything victory you can from the smallest things to the biggest things

4 Don't be afraid to fail

The fear of failure can be crippling to some people and in turn it stops them from succeeding, being afraid of failure can stop you from taking steps to become successful every single day, you have to ask yourself are you sabotaging yourself?

I know a lot of people who have sabotaged their own success in the past from things like college degrees to job promotions and relationships, subconsciously sabotaging yourself is something we all eventually deal with but understanding when you're doing is the most important thing to overcoming it, yeah you might fail but you aren't going to die(unless you're like skydiving without a parachute or something).

As i said above, failure is a stepping stone to success, you didn't learn to sprint before you fell over a bunch of times trying to stand up and this is no different if you can understand this you can start to see your failures as successes because you will learn what not to do in the future.

5. Don't be afraid to call it quits and be honest with yourself.

This one is a huge there are literally millions of people out there right now setting themselves up for failure trying to accomplish something they simply can't, I myself have done this in the past and thankfully have stopped doing it and learned to recognize it.

If you are struggling with something you're unsure about or can't make work there a few things you can do to help with this.

  • Set a timeline for what you want to achieve
  • Devote yourself to your goals until you fail or succeed within that timeline
  • Understand what you're up against and act accordingly
  • Don't dig a hole so deep you can't get out of it
  • Know when it's time to let go of it.

Those are the 5 essential steps to accepting a defeat, some people give up too soon and some give up too late, you want to control it as much as possible, if you control your failure is it really a failure or a sign of knowing yourself honestly and accepting your limitations.

6. Remind yourself of what you have already achieved in life.

If you have made it to the point where you need motivation for something you have already achieved something.

You don't need motivation to be lazy and you don't need success if you plan on failing forever, most people never take stock of what they have in their lives that they're already happy about, their dogs, relationships, kids, sports, exercise, food the list can keep going on, so ask yourself why should you be motivated to succeed today?

Taking stock of every achievement under your belt, big and small, is incredibly motivating when you take the time to think about it, do you want to have 5 major victories in life? chances are you already have had them and 10 times more, setting your sights on something in the distance future can help bring clarity to your life but it doesn't help you right now when you need it the most.

One thing to also remember is that nobody on earth is immune to the power of motivation from the richest man on the planet to the poorest and everything in between you can be motivated by anything at the drop of a hat, so if things are available to you to motivate you to succeed and you can grasp them right now, why wouldn't you.
