While I think many of us are lured by the potential of money (or equivalent), I'm going to using an approach that touches on some of the points you mentioned but without the expectation of getting paid. Namely creating quality content unique to my brand, and naturally connecting with like-minded people out of curiosity and a growth mindset.
Oddly enough, by switching the focus away from making money, I feel like I'm in a better position to make money since my content is that much better, and the connections I have made are more relevant.
