There are many things that are hidden from the ordinary view, a lot of distractions, a lot of responsibilities, hustles and bustles, in this era that being able to pay attention is among the best superpowers anyone can have. I have come to understand that when you are able to pay attention to even hidden details, you will unlock a lot of opportunities that others may not even know existed. Trust me, in life, luck is good, talents are also good, but all these work better when you learn to pay attention. As a matter of fact, it is your attention that will shape your reality, because it will determine how you act, react to things, and respond to situations.
Almost every big achievement that you get will begin with paying attention. Take for example, if you want to learn a skill, you must first be attentive to know what the skill is all about, then you will begin to learn it in details. Even in your relationship, you will still need to pay attention to little details, so as to sustain and strengthen your relationship. There are some people that may not verbally communicate their needs or their concerns to their partners at all times. But when you pay attention, you will know when there are changes, when things are not right, what should be done, and what not to be done. Just to let you know, nothing improves without paying attention. Even as a student, you should know that the difference between success and failure might just come down to the one paying attention.
It is worthy to note that attention is not just about looking, but about seeing. It is not just about hearing, but listening. It is also not just about knowing things, but understanding them. These are part of what make you more creative, more effective, more intentional, more accurate, and more prepared to make the most of opportunities. There are errors that will be easily avoided if you learn to pay attention. More so, there are opportunities that will not be lost because you are sensitive to see them and take advantage of them. You have to learn to see beyond what others just see, and listen beyond what others just hear.
There are some people who have incredible abilities, but they have not maximised them because they do not focus long enough to put them to use. Some others have mind-blowing dreams, yet they have not achieved them because they are not disciplined enough to pay attention to bring the dreams to reality. In more cases than none, success does not go to the most talented, but to those who pay attention to even the little details. When we entered school newly many years ago, there was this student who organised tutorials for the freshers. He was really good and intelligent. But after the exam, in one of the papers, he scored way below expectation. Some of us that he taught even did excellently more than him. We got concerned about his performance that we went with him to the dean to pull up his exam script for review.
The process of recalling a script was tedious but we had to go all the way with him because we did not expect that kind of result for him. We all thought that it was a mistake. When his script was finally released to us and we went through it, it was surprising that in one question, he misread the question and it invalidated the answer. This was the question that he knew, but because he did not pay attention to details, he did not see the instruction in the question. Just by not being attentive, he scored below par. This shows the power that is resident in attention. Success can well be determined by your ability to watch, notice, adjust, and act rightly.
Attention can also help you to shape your destiny. This is because, more often than not, what you focus on tends to expand. If you focus on your dreams and your goals, they will become easier to be achieved. Focusing on excellence makes you achieve excellence. Focusing on improvement makes you to get better by the day. Your mind tends to go where your predominant attention is, and your life will also follow suit. So focus more on what you want to attract.
