Seeing Beyond The Surface: The Power Of Observation

in #motivation21 hours ago

More often than not, big achievements start by noticing the small things. Success often comes as result of paying attention to even very small details. Observation is one of the potent gateways that lead to innovation and creativity. In the world we find ourselves in, a lot of things are moving with lightning speed. The ability to pause, take closer look at things, and observe them critically has become a rare, yet powerful gift. It is sad to see people go through life even with open eyes, yet without observing anything. They ignore little details, quiet cues, and signals that could transform their life's journey and make it a lot easier. There is power in observation to make the journey of life easier.

Just to let you know, observation is not just about looking or watching, but about understanding, interpreting, and taking advantage of opportunities even the ones that others may miss. A major part of the people who you see as successful are those who have trained themselves on the art of looking beyond what they can see. That is, looking beyond the surface. When you have conditioned your mind for critical observation, you will begin to notice patterns that will determine your choices. At this point, you will begin to read beyond actions and see the intentions behind them. There are things you can achieve by simple observation. As a business person for example, you can notice a need in your environment, and then provide the solution for it, and you will make your profit. The power of observation can make a big impact in your life.

I remember what happened in a place I worked briefly while I was in school, during the vacation period. After about 3 weeks of being in a department, I was moved to another department, and the work environment looked very different. The systems, machines, devices, and everything about that new department were totally different from where I was coming from. When I resumed in the new department, I asked my H.OD how I was going to learn how to operate all the machines, he looked at me with a smile and simply said "observe." The word was short and direct, yet it opened me up to the power of observation.

As I watched and observed others work with the machines and the systems, I started picking up the required knowledge needed to operate them. In less than 2 weeks in the new department, I was already assisting with the running of the machines. Something very remarkable happened one day. As I came to work early, the H.O.D assigned me to start up the machines and get to work because a particular client had come very early to request for a quick work. Since I was the only one in that department to come that early, I was given the task. I simply applied the knowledge I had gotten from observation, and I kick-started the task. By the time the others would come, I had already gone midway through the task and they were surprised. When they asked how I learnt so well to run it alone, I told them that I observed them. That is the power of observation.

In many aspects of life, the power of observation holds unquestionable importance. In your relationship for example, your observation can deepen emotional intelligence. By paying attention to your partner's tone, body languages, facial expression, you can gather enough information that will help you to connect better with them, build stronger relationship, and avoid conflict. You may ask them how they are and they will reply with "I am fine," but by observation, you will see what their words are not saying.

When you are a keen observer, you will find clarity. Even times when life may seem overwhelming, you will not panic, but slow down, think, and analyse the situation. By observation, you will discover that the solution to a problem may not be far from the problem itself. It might even be staring you in the face, but you need to look beyond the surface to see it. Opportunities may be wrapped in what looks like a challenge, but when you observe, you will be able to uncover it.
