I have come to understand that a lot of things we do have effects that outlive the present. As a matter of fact, actions, decisions, choices, are like seeds that are sown. You will agree with that when a farmer plants seeds in his farm, he will come back to harvest from what he has planted in the past. Same also goes with the actions and decisions you take now. In this era, a lot of people are so much concerned about quick results, instant money, quick influence, fast recognition, etc. While these things are not bad, it is good to point out that building your life only on the hopes of the moment will lead to poor decisions. When you take actions or make choices, you have to look beyond the present and the immediate, and then consider what the future effects will be.

Thinking long-term means that you are taking decisions and making choices that will produce results in the future. Which means, you are looking way beyond the temporary comfort, and considering the impact of your actions in the future. You have to understand that you do not only live for today, you should also live for tomorrow. This is why you have to make choices that will positively impact on your tomorrow. This will definitely require patience, discipline, wisdom, and more importantly, the willingness to sacrifice immediate pleasure for greater rewards in the future.
It is worthy to note that thinking long-term is part of what helps you to make better decisions. Trust me, if you know that your actions will have consequences in the future, you will be careful and cautious of how you act. Take this instance; a student who has exams to prepare for, but often spends their time partying, going for outings, and doing other unwholesome things. When exam comes, they will find it difficult to cope, because they did not make the right choices. But another student made a choice to take their studies seriously, attended classes, and did other academic activities. When exams comes, they will scale through. Understand that actions will definitely have some very significant effects.
In addition to making the right choices, you have to be consistent about it. The long-term success you desire may not come as a result of just one single big moment, but by the small and consistent actions you undertake often. If you want to build muscles for example, you will not get it by just lifting a massive amount of weight for just once-and-for-all, but by consistently and constantly lifting weights. The truth is that the little consistent efforts you put into something is far better than waiting until you can take a giant stride. When you understand that meaningful progress can take time, you will begin to plan for long-term. It will also make you to remain discipline and be on the right course even if the results do not come immediately.

When you think long-term, you will be able to overcome temporary challenges. You have to understand that life may present you with challenges and other unforeseen situations. Those who only focuses on the present may become discouraged when life comes with challenges. But those who think long-term will see the challenges as valuable tools upon which their future is built on. That is, instead of thinking about what is happening and why it is happening, it will be better to consider how it will be of help to you and how you can turn it into opportunities to learn something that will make your tomorrow better than your today.
Thinking long-term promotes continuous growth. It also encourages you to invest in yourself. That is, instead of focusing only on quick rewards, it will make you to focus also on building yourself, developing your skills, improving your knowledge, getting better, building good character, and building good habits that will increase your personal worth and value in the future. This is what brings lasting success. Lasting success comes from careful planning, and wise decisions. The decisions and the choices you make today will be part of what will create your future for you. As a matter of fact, your tomorrow will be formed basically by your actions of today and yesterday. So for every decision you want to take, or every choice you want to make, or actions you want to take, always consider the long-term effects.
