Gold - Movie Review

I sat down to watch this film not really knowing what it was about and I found my self drawn in by the story line (I did a google search after the film was over to see if it was actually true). I also enjoyed seeing Matthew looking fat and balding, it gave me hope that with enough work I could look like he did in Magic Mike minus the hair of course.

The film starts out with Kenny Wells (Matthew McConaughey) working for his dad's company before taking over in the early 1990's, before flashing forward in time to Wells down on his luck and trying desperately hard to find the one prospect that will put him on top of the world. Following an alcohol induced dream Wells flies of to foreign lands to hook up with a once great but now less so great geologist who knows just where to find the worlds biggest gold mine.

What follows is a story of skull duggery, ego, booze, bad decisions, triumph, more ego, plus not to mention investment bankers which always introduces corruption (sorry bankers) and eventually fraud to bring Wells right back to the top of the world just where he wanted to be with his golden pick.

As this film is meant to be bourn out of fact there is inevitably a sting in the tale, one which bring Wells down to earth with a very hard bump, it is some what ironic that it is the same earth that he is trying so hard to dig up that gets him.

Overall the film is an easy watch, it certainly is not the best film that McConaughey will ever or has ever made but it does what you expect it to do. I would recommend this film if you just wanted something light to watch and did not want to do much thinking.
