Major Is Not Happy; Minor Is Not Sad

in #music4 years ago (edited)

Musicians often describe music as happy or sad.

More specifically, musicians describe major sounding music as happy and minor sounding music as sad.

I believe this is an unhelpful generalization.

Sad songs can be in major keys and still feel somber, reflective, sorrowful, and yearning.

A good example is Regina Spektor's Braille, one of the most under-celebrated songs of her spectacular catalogue.

On the other hand, songs in minor keys can be sexy, romantic, soulful, peaceful, and curious. All of these emotions are happy.

Autumn Leaves is a classic standard interpreted beautifully by many musicians. It's a captivating piece; Bubbling beneath the surface is a sense of celebration for the beauty and romance of life.

Several modern pop club hits are in minor keys, such as Ariana Grande's Break Up With Your Girlfriend

I believe it is more accurate to compare major to the sun and minor to the moon. I feel lunar energy when I hear a song in a minor key. I've heard astrologists compare minor to feminine energy and major to masculine energy.

Music is far more complex than happy or sad. Tonality is far more versatile. It will continue to surprise us. There is balance in all things- masculine & feminine, light & dark. Let's become curious about it and find deeper ways to enjoy it.

Those old black and white Bill Evans music videos are literally the first "proper art" music videos of all time. Their use of superimposition, camera angles etc. was WAY ahead of its time, and MUCH more "evolved" than the modern music video crap...

I really enjoy a music video that just shows the artists working. It's fun to watch real instruments being played.
