1. Not every photographer is suitable for your purpose
You have a buddy who likes to take a snapshot. What is more obvious than asking him to take press photos for you? After all, the budget is limited and the new guitar tempts seductively in the shop window.
But can your buddy do that at all? A photographer is just as much a photographer as a musician is a musician. Nobody would seriously say to a musician: "You can play the drums - then you can certainly play the trumpet". Most photographers specialize in an area, just as musicians learn an instrument.
A nature photographer has very different interests than a photographer who specializes in portraits. So look for a photographer who has experience with band portraits or someone who knows how to stage people. Maybe you saw press pictures from other bands that impressed you. Ask for it: contacts are made quickly.
2. Not every picture suitable for all purposes
You hired a photographer to shoot a press photo for you. Outstanding! But why do you use only one thing? Different media require different types of press images.
For example, in many rdactions all title pictures are in landscape format, so a portrait in portrait format must be edited. You should take that into account in any case. So always have several portraits in different formats in stock.
3. Shaky or upscaled images end up in the dustbin
The quality of image files on the net has improved dramatically in recent years. In the meantime, you can shoot high-resolution photos with any mobile phone. Your band photos should therefore have print quality so that newspapers, magazines and online magazines can use them equally.
Reduce or scale down then always goes without real loss of quality. Conversely, this is not possible. Accordingly, indistinct photos are completely unsuitable because they would attract attention in the context of the rest of the magazine and therefore are not used.
4. Pictures should be staged in the same way as pieces of music
Four nice young people smiling friendly at the camera: This is a possible band portrait. But it is only one of many possibilities.
Just as bands tend to think a lot about the arrangements of their songs, they should also think about how to stage themselves on their band photos, from the clothing to the background, the location of the shoot, to positions or activities in the picture , Basically, this is about having a coherent image and your photos contribute a lot to brand building.
Your imagination knows no bounds, but it certainly helps to work together with a photographer who can advise you competently.
5. How to get usable concert photos
You are a band. So why not make a picture that shows you in action, ideally, of course, at a concert. That's easier said than done. Concert photography is a specialty discipline for photographers. In a very short time you have to try to make usable pictures in a group with other photographers in low light conditions. Not every photographer can really do that.
Therefore, live images of new bands are mostly of poor quality, especially too dark or blurred. But it is not very difficult or difficult to hire a photographer to photograph you in concert. But definitely take someone who has experience photographing bands in concerts. Here is: Better not a live picture than a bad one! Otherwise a possibly totally wrong, bad impression of your stage appearance arises.
