Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
I think I was at the Sequoia National Forest in California when I was a little kid but I was too little to remember much but my, would I love to go there now! I can only imagine being in the presence of these magnificent trees.
The largest one, and the largest in the world, is named General Sherman and stands 274.9 feet (83.8 meters) tall but is a youngster at just 2,000 years old. Lol.
Many of the Redwoods are over 3,200 years old. I'm sure that means General Sherman still growing though!
General Sherman:
This group of visitors gives you and idea of the size of General Sherman's size:
And check this out: a branch broke off in a storm in 2006 and crushed a section of fence and created a big hole in the walkway. The branch is as big as a whole tree!
The General contains 52,500 cubic feet (1,487 cubic meters) in volume. It has giant branches too but they don't take the branch sizes into consideration when measuring volume, just the trunk.
The 2nd largest tree on earth is in the same park and is named The President and stands at 247 feet (75 m) and measures 27 ft (8.2 m) in diameter at the base. They estimate it to be 3,200 years old!

Those three climbers are hard to spot in this one, can you find them? It makes one realize what specks we are on this earth compared to much of nature.
I bet you can just feel the energy of those magnificent trees when you're in that forest.

I was fortunate to see the Redwoods once while living on the west coast. I made a video of my trip. I couldn't believe how big they were! Here it is I thought the Doug Fir trees were big until I got the Redwood Forest. I remember having to turn on the headlights because the trees were so tall they blocked out the sun making it dark.
haha! Howdy sir rainbow man! That is funny, I never thought of that..making it dark in the daytime! wow, that had to be an experience. It has to be one of the few great things about the West Coast!
I also drove down the Pacific coast highway out of WA state. I have some photos somewhere. I took one with the tanker truck I was driving, and the tree trunks were bigger than the tanker. I took some river stones the size of a basketball. They are mixed in with the PA farm field stones around our pond.

I saw the sequoias when I was a kid and sadly can't really remember them. I do have a few pictures from the family trip that proves I was there though!! haha

You know I have always wondered, if the age of a tree is measured by counting its rings, how do they know the age of a tree that is still standing?
Howdy sir gduran! That's a great question. In a forest full of similar trees it's fairly accurate to estimate age by counting the rings on fallen or dead trees of the same species and that's what they do on the Sequoias. From fallen trees they have a good idea of the growth rate so they can estimate that by measuring the size.

I've been to see the sequoias. It was lovely. Yesterday I was in a local state park and stumbled along "Old Methulsalah", which is a five hundred year old cypress. Impressive, but certainly not on the same scale.

Those trees are amazing, hope to see them some day. Sometimes I feel like I am just a speck on earth but then I remember I am truly gargantuan when compared to a bacteria or atom. The way I see it we are positioned about smack-dab in the middle of it all.

I've been to the Grand Sequoia NP back in 2015 and those trees are MASSIVE! You do have to crane your neck just to be able to see half way up the tree! I think I saw both of these trees but will have to consult the travel journals as a lot has happened since then!

LOL No I had plans of so many other places to visit before my flying days came to an end, and I have only been to less than a third of the countries in the world :)

LOL, Mostly commercial but some aircraft also chartered by our organization in Missions, I have been to a little over 60 Countries I have colleagues who have been to more ;)

Nothing embarrassing about that, because first off you have been to one :) unless your living in another planter that does not have countries LOL and I have friends and family, who have never left, the state or region they live in :)

Hey janton, isn't it just so wonderful that trees can grow so big for years and years, so much energy oozing out. One would not want to be walking along under on those gigantic trees when a branch falls down, lol.
Yeah, you take cover under the tree in a storm for protection and get squished by a giant branch! lol. But yes, they sure are remarkable.

I saw some smaller redwoods in BC and Seattle area (still big). I've also seen big guys in Ontario. Very nice to see a large tree.

Most of the mighty oaks, here on the Island, were cut down eons ago for shipbuilding.
British Columbia has ancient Douglas fir trees and sequoias but I don’t know if they can match the California Redwood in bigness.

I hope to get out there sometime too but not in the summer. They say the heat is suffocating in the summer with no wind and over 100 degrees temperature which would be over 41C I believe.

Yeah and one guy said he went deep into the forest in the middle of the day but the trees are so big and thick in some areas that it's as dark as night time because they block out the sun! So you have to take big flashlights with you! lol. Either that or go with Miss Lena who's bright personality will light the way!

It's been a while since i have been to the redwoods. One of the coolest things i noticed is that when you get to less visited areas there is an incredibly thick carpet of the fallen leaves. It's super soft and super quiet. It's the strangest feeling walking through it. Some of trees have hollow spaces in the trunks that are as big as a small house. Nice to duck in out the rain

There's a lot a places you could go. Not all the redwoods are as big as those but they are still huge. Some places like that have more visitors to see the famous trees. If you do go i suggest checking the area temperature for what time of year you plan on going. It can be very hot in summer in some areas. It was 103 in Ukiah the time i went through there. Not fun at all. Luckily for me Humboldt Bay is not far from there and it was 68 degrees there.

Yes sir rossfletcher, the ocean is great in the summer but kinda freezing in the winter with nothing to block the wind. In most places, not Southern California!
Have you ever seen the old movie Endless Summer? Most of the spots they filmed were filmed in winter! Surfers have always been meteorologists of a sort. Especially in the old days before the internet. Winter cold fronts are generally what create the swells that people surf. The northern and southern hemisphere winter fronts crossing the globe over the Pacific and Atlantic generate the vast majority of swell. Once and a while a tropical low pressure like a hurricane will whip up a swell. Often the same storm crossing Russia will snow in Northern Japan then send swell to Hawaii then California and maybe even snow in Texas as it moves east - or at least bring rain. Hmmm i didn't check if Texas gets any snow? Haha.
The pro surfing tour is currently in South Africa at Jeffery's Bay. Winter in Africa.
Onshore wind is always bad for surfing conditions. it's not always onshore though. So you surf around the wind.
One of the more well-known ones fell over a couple years back. It was one that they cut a hole through for the road, back in the day. If they had known it was over 2,000 years old back then, I wonder if they would have defiled it that way.
It would certainly be interesting to climb one. A bit unnerving, I bet.
yes, you'd have to be a rock climber I think, I have no idea how they get up there though. I didn't know about the one with the road through it, I wonder if that's what killed it?

This is awesome! I love to see it. We were in TX and visited a VERY large, wise, and old oak tree. We did yoga under the tree and then the group of 10 of us stretched out, hand in hand, as wide as we could to hug the tree and we only got half way around the tree....that was how wide the tree was! It was in Benbrook TX hiddine in the far back part of a field...just passed the field was a small nature preserve area where she sat. I loved that space. It was so peaceful.

It sure is by Fort Worth. :) We used to live in Weatherford and would frequent Fort Worth often as most of our friends lived in that area. Yes it was a very very old tree and massive. Majestic honestly.

Sequoia National Park is the bee's knees for sure! I haven't been there in a while, but, I can remember the awe in which I stood, staring like it was an alien. To me, surely it was a magical place to be.
I sometimes forget the ratio in size compare to us, but, your visuals with those climbers surely put it right back in perspective. I know there are redwoods in various parts of the country but this place is amazing and so worth the visit!

Howdy Butterfly! I agree, I think that place would be magnificent. Except they said don't go in the summer because there is no breeze, it's suffocating in there with super high temps over a hundred degrees and in the deep parts it's like night time because the sun is totally blocked out!
