Island Living - Unexpected Visitors

in #nature7 years ago (edited)

Living in a cabin in a tropical jungle might sound like a lot of fun to adventure seekers and wildlife lovers, it sure does to me. Tonight I was reminded of how beautiful nature is when a 'Tokay gecko' paid me a visit.

These Geckos are native to South East Asia and they can get quite big. The one I found in my kitchen was not the biggest of the sort but neither was it small, not to mention the sound it makes. The name Tokay was derived from the sound it makes.

A Tokay gecko is not venomous but it can deliver a deep bite that will hurt a lot, all depending on the size of the gecko. A short google search will tell you that they are 'aggressive' but 'misunderstood' however I am an animal lover and this gecko seemed to have taken a liking in living with me. I named this one Rango, it should be noted that the Rango in the movie is not a Tokay but rather a chameleon for those who did not already know. Rango has been crawling all around the cabin for a few weeks but never really coming close to where we hang out, but tonight it decided to visit the kitchen.

This is a loud lizard, and Rango made that very clear tonight while I was minding my own business making some snacks when it shouted it's name at me nearly making me soil my pants. After a short google search I learnt that this one might be a female since it is much smaller in size compared to the other geckos who also recently decided to come hang around the cabin. Although they have been much more elusive and stealthy than Rango, I have gotten a glimpse of another one and the pure size of it gave me a bit of chill for a second or two. I guess I'll have to give Rango a new name, if only I knew what it could possibly be..

The same search also told me that they can grow to to 40cm and weigh up to 300+ grams. They are a bit frightening at first glance but they serve a higher purpose to me by keeping the cabin clean of any unwanted insects that could prove to be a challenge for my girlfriend.
