American society as a whole is more violent. It's in the mentality of the people. People are comfortable with higher levels of violence than in the rest of the developed world. Look at the 1000-year prison sentences, the supermax prisons or the popularity of the death penalty. A large subset of the people are strongly conservative Christians whose ideas of criminal justice are influenced by the primitive mentality of Jewish people around the time Jesus lived and before. Perhaps the colonial history of the Americas plays a role. Brazil is a pretty depressing place compared to Portugal if you look at the stats as is the rest of Latin America compared to Spain or the rest of the former motherlands. Britain is a more peaceful and civilized place compared to the US even today despite the conquest of the West being over longer than a century ago. I don't know about Canada but from what I understood from warnings by our hosts, Vancouver was and still probably is somewhat less peaceful than Helsinki.
