Mass stabbing in Turku, Finland.

in #news7 years ago (edited)

A terrible incident has happened in Turku, Finland. A person went on a stabbing spree in the downtown of Turku, resulting in deaths of at least two persons and several people injured.

Here's a DailyMail article for more information.

My intention is not to just  report this incident, but rather bring light to some rumors that are floating around this case. At the moment there has been a narrative going around that this would be a terrorist attack by a Muslim radical.

  • Currently this incident is not being investigated as a terrorist attack, but it's still not ruled out
  • No confirmation that the culprit would be a Muslim. Only a claim by some eyewitness(es) that he was "foreign-looking".
  • This viral video
    • People are claiming that a guy in the video is shouting "Allahu Akbar". This seems to not be the case.
    • I couldn't figure out what he is shouting at the very beginning, but this is what I got out from it.
    • First he shouts "Varo", which means "watch out" in Finnish and that means it's directed to a single person.
    • After that he  shouts "Varokaa", which also means "watch out" in Finnish, but it means that it's directed to multiple people.

Even though I'm a native Finnish person, the video is not crystal clear and there is always a chance that I'm wrong, so keep that in mind. Still, after watching the video several times with different speeds, I'm convinced that that's the case. There have also been numerous native Finnish people breaking down the video and ended up with the same results.

Even though it sometimes feels that the world is a terrible place that's beyond repair, we must remember how far we have become as a human race. The fact is that we live the most peaceful times ever, but the negative things that are happening can easily make us forget that.

Never give up and work towards making the world a better place. For all of us. Bless all of you lovely people <3

Great job on sharing this news with an unbiased and positive perspective!

It is far too common for people to jump into conclusions in this type of situations, which only escalates silly prejudices and clouds their view on reality. On the other hand, I completely agree that we should look beyond these incidents, tragic as they are, and realize that we are in the best spot ever, not only to live a good and enriching life but also to help others and combat ignorance.
