New Year's Eve in Spain; eating 12 grapes at the sound of 12 bells

in #newyear4 years ago (edited)

Today we celebrate the end of the year!

In Spain the tradition is "las campanadas", this tradition has also been extended to some countries in South America.

A clock strikes 12 chimes to mark the end of a year and the beginning of a new one, at midnight on the 31st of December each year. The tradition consists of taking 12 grapes, one for each strike.
Normally you eat dinner and eat the grapes with your family, and then go out to party with your friends.

All the TV channels broadcast "las campanadas", most of them meeting at Madrid's Puerta del Sol, where a large clock rings the bells.

During this night we like to dress up as it will be a very long night! These are some pictures from a previous year end, with my brother Marc <3 Tonight, more!

And later, with friends!

We prepare the 12 grapes per person in small bowls because there is no time to lose, the bells go very fast and some people find it difficult to get them :P (for exemple, me :) ).

An example from a previous year campaigns on TVE, the national public television in Spain.

This is only the part of the chimes, before and after it all the TV channels usually make quite a show :)

Looking forward to tonight!
