Despite the fact that moving it all (especially the heavy, wet stuff like this is) seems to get a bit harder with each passing year, the year's first real snowfall is always gorgeous and mesmerizing. I was led to believe by Al Gore and his ilk that we would probably have a warmish October up here, but alas--as the photos below clearly show--it's beginning to look like it will be an early and long winter in these parts.
Above is the view out my garage in the back of the house looking out over the 10 cords of "tree length" which was just delivered. I will cut this and then split the larger pieces over the next three springs, and then I will supplement that with 2-4 cords of already cut-split-and-delivered hardwood (that just needs stacking) in preparation for our long, cold winters here in the "Great White North."
Above is my "little house on the prairie"...i.e. my storage shed where I keep anything that a little dampness and wind won't bother much...like my garden tools, etc. It's very "airy" and I sure wouldn't want to sleep out there! Kind of has a bit of a Norman Rockwell quality to it, though...
Above is our lone evergreen tree, that was about five feet tall when we moved here in 1996, but is now closer to 15-feet tall. We've kept it, as it acts as a pretty good "wind break" from the harsh north winds for the little flower garden it shelters.
Above, is our "Shelter Logic" temporary garage that is a bit less permeable than the old wooden shed. It's also a lot bigger. We keep our 18'-power boat stored in there on its 23' trailer, PLUS my garden tractor, rototiller, grill, and a few other things that need to be kept a bit drier. I actually still kept this front end open until yesterday and was grilling off the back of it (that beautiful Ukrainian summer squash I've written about before) all the way up until Monday afternoon. But its time is up now...and it's sealed up for winter finally.
Our boat puller and wood lugger (above)...a 2007 Nissan Frontier...has to "Tough it out" out in the elements all winter, parked right here, with the wheels turned uphill, as it does sit on a slight downgrade there. I wouldn't want it deciding to "slip, slide away" down Route One on me somehow some cold night...
The old (1840) homestead in Amity, which has withstood hundreds and hundreds of storms much worse than this one.
Above is a view down U.S. Route One (towards Key West, Florida....lol....) as a single lonely pickup struggles through the inch deep snow. Three more inches are expected by tonight...
Above is the reason that Christmas favorite, "Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow" is so popular with we hearty northern Mainers. With eight cords of good hardwood all laid in and well-seasoned (much of it you can't see in the photo as it is also piled against the south wall to the left of this photo) we can take on just about anything. This is looking back into our garage, and the storage spot for our main mode of transport...a fuel efficient Honda..where she stays throughout those long winter nights.
So...be of good cheer all! God is on His throne, and his beauty is constantly displayed in all its variety and hues across this great nation of ours.
