A long time away..returning with a nautical piece to start

in #ocd2 years ago

Hey all, I've been away for quite some time. But figured I'd pop in to share some more work. Yeah it's been close to year, since then I've closed my store and gone completely online. Orders have backed up and it's been difficult to keep up. Another reason you haven't seen any of my posts.

I'm here now and would like to share a project I just finished up.
A 20ft tall Lighthouse carved into a rooted oak tree.

It started off looking like this...a blank canvas..

Yep thats me standing there dwarfed by that monster of a tree stump.

A quick sketch for the customer..

Client had set up scaffolding for me but it wasn't a solid footing for me. Plus any piece that would've been cut off could come crashing down onto the platform, taking my feet out from underneath me. DANGER! So I had the client rent a bucket lift. Much safer.

End of day 1...

Day 2 it started to take shape...

Details done day 3 but the customer thought there wasn't enough and wanted the bottom half of the tree carved as well.

Day 4 and almost complete...

Finished up on day 5 and the result was a very happy customer.

That came out really good. Beautiful work. 🤗

Welcome back, Very nice job. Love the way you used the lean in the tree to make it more dynamic. What kind of finish do you put on the wood to preserve it?

Thank you, yeah the stump was shaped like a banana, so to have it look straight/plumb I had to stop it mid-way or make it thinner to go all the way down.
For varnish, the customer will be using a water based deck sealer with uv protection and some borate rods at the base.

I love seeing your process here, @jonatftforest - thank you for sharing it all - and the piece looks magnificent! :-)

Thank you so much, I have lots to share...more to come
