The creepy highway
The infamous highway in Malaysia, legends and folklore of tragic events have been told repeatedly. To this date, no one could explain how or why this came to be. It was so famous that there were movies about it. When I was younger, I was warned to never drive at this road in the middle of the night and it stucked with me until I was an adult. I mean it is dark as hell at night with no proper street lamp so I usually just avoid it. The accident count at the highway is really high, which usually ends with death. This sounds creepy but when I was younger, my parents would drive pass the highway I would see cars after cars stopping by the side of the road with hazard light. I assume their engine died.
The Karak expressway was constructed in 1974 and completed in 1979 with a stretch of 37.28 miles, beginning at Gombak North, Selangor to the East end of Karak, Pahang. The primary destination for using this highway is to Gombak, Genting Highlands ( a great casino and resort up in the mountains ), Bukit tinggi, Bentong and Karak. Here are stories that will spook you out !
The Demonic Creature
This was set in the 80’s when a family of 3 was headed home during the festive season. It was late at night in the lonely stretch when their car suddenly broke down. To the husband’s surprise, he remembered checking the car before heading out. He had no choice but to pull over the side to inspect. His wife and his baby was waiting while he was trying to fix but to no avail. So they decided to wait for help. Minute after minutes passed and yet no signs of cars around. He then look for the nearest phone booth, leaving his wife and baby in the car. Hours passed and he hasn’t return after looking for help. The wife grew frantically worried as the time past way over midnight. When she was slowly dozing off, she heard a thud from the roof of the car. Remembering the warning from her husband to never leave the vehicle, she stayed still. As the sound grew louder and louder, she panicked and tried to get a glimpse of what’s above the roof. Thankfully a patrol car arrive as she was trying to get off the vehicle. The two officers got off the car and said “mam, please exit the vehicle slowly and don’t look back”. The wife slowly got off the car carrying the baby and walk towards to the officers. Her curiosity got the best of her and she turn around to take a look. The sight sent shivers down her spine as she turns ice chill. Above the car, was an old hideous banshee-like creature feasting on her husband’s head without body. Blood were pouring all over. The creature then flew away and disappeared in the forest. The other version of this story was her being killed.
The Yellow Volkswagen
Legend has it that this phantom yellow Volkswagen beetle appears along the karak highway and a short small tunnel close to the exit of Genting Highlands. Countless reports from motorist and drivers that encountered this ghostly car claim it only happens very late at night. From the anecdotes, the yellow Volkswagen will appear and block your lane, moving very slowly. It forces you to overtake it. Even though it is a highway, there’re certain tight spots that the car will appear like at a one lane road. It is said that once you’ve overtaken it, you’ll often find it in front of you again, blocking your way. No matter how many times you overtake, it will appear again. They say if you drive next to it, you’ll find that there’s no one driving in the car. Some also refuse to overtake it as they’ve been told many drivers got into fatal accident or their vehicles begin breaking down after driving pass the yellow Volkswagen
Few weeks ago, I met with my friend’s brother who actually encountered the yellow Volkswagen. Couple of weeks prior to our meeting, he was driving along the highway, in a narrow road where only 1 car can drive on. As he was driving by himself late at night, the mysterious yellow Volkswagen appeared in front of him. I don’t mean like appearing out of thin air but driving through the road, he met with the car because it was moving really slow. Out of annoyance, he overtook the car and sped off. Looking back at the rear mirror, the yellow Volkswagen headlamp disappears in the dark. Minutes later, it APPEARED again in front of him. To his thought “HOW THE F*** is this possible”?, the car was way at the back and there’s no way it could’ve overtaken him. Thank goodness there was a car behind him driving really fast, the car overtook him and the Volkswagen so he just tailed along. He then never saw the yellow car again.
The lost young boy
As the story goes, the young schoolboy and his mom were involved in a fatal accident. Upon collision, the mother was flung out of the car and died instantly while her son remained in the seat with glasses from the windscreen piercing into his eyes. The wandering spirit of the young boy is seen lurking aimless looking for his mother. If ever anyone sees this young boy walking around the highway, looking desolated, repeated asking “Have you seen my mama”, do not engage with it.
Closing
While these are just a few stories that are commonly known around Malaysians, there are certainly more to these.
