Senator Miriam Santiago is one of the most respected Senator in the Philippines. She is one of the most upright, honest, and influential politician for Filipinos. She was also well-known as a witty and humorous speaker where she could make the audiences laugh to her jokes. 1. She is genius.
Sen. Santiago is not just a mere politician, but a “genius” politician. Before she arrived to where she was appointed, she studied at University of Michigan, and not just an average student, but she aimed a very high score that made her enter a special program of this University. After entering this special program, she enabled to finish her Master of Laws and Doctor of the Science. Do you know how long she took these courses? She took it within one year and six months only surpassing other law students. Before she took this long road, she was a student in B.A Political Science in UP Visayas and she managed to finish her study for only three years and a half year.
2. She dreamt being a writer but end up being lawyer.
If you are asking why she took the career of being a lawyer, it is because of her criminal relatives, just what she stated before. When Philippines Star interviewed her, she said the most of her relatives graduated with flying colors, but they only end up on being cattle rustlers, murderer, and burning other houses. She laughed after saying that statement. We do not know how serious her statements are, but it clearly seen that her relatives had great impact on what route she took.
3. She was the youngest judge in Metro Manila appointed by Marcos.
She was the judge at RTC or Regional Trial Court. During her first year being judge, she disposed more cases than the usual cases disposed by other judges. She was not just famous for being an upright judge during that time, she was also well known as being the first person to rule against martial law. She was awarded by YMCA Philippines, The Philippine Jaycees, and The Philippine Lions for judicial excellence.
4. Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago almost died by “car accident.”
Although it was said to be car accident, there were some evidences or other cases unsolved that showed that the car crash was not actually an accident, but an assassination attempts to kill the Senator. When the incident happened, she was running for presidency and Secretary in Agrarian Reform. During this incident, she had life-threatening injuries that might cost her life before. Thankfully, God is with her and lived a longer time.
5. There were 15 Laws initiated by Senator Miriam Santiago.
Senator Santiago helped the Philippine Institution in big ways. She also helped to establish helpful laws that will sustain the right of Filipino citizens. Some of these laws are Climate Change Act of 2009, Sin Tax Law, Reproductive Health Act of 2012, Renewable Energy Act of 2008, Philippine Act on Crimes Against International Humanitarian Law, Unifast Act, Cybercrime Act of 2012, and Anti-dynasty bill.
6. She had various achievements that will amaze you.
She handled different committees when she was the Senator. After being the judge in the Regional Trial Court, she was elected as the new judge if the international Criminal Court by the States Parties to Rome Statute in December 2011 for nine years. At that time, she was the very first Southeast Asian that was elected as a judge in the International Criminal Court.
She studied Doctor of Juridical Science, she graduated from University of Michigan with flying colors. She was a cum laude in the University in the Philippines in 1969, and a lot more achievements in her life.
7. She was a magnificent Senator in the Philippines.
Out of all Senators in the Philippines, she was the one you could really tell that did so well. Though, it was already given that senators are also doing their jobs. But Senator Santiago were not wavered by hypocrisy and corruption inside the politics. She did so well that he caught the heart of many people.
