[ Solosophy ] PERSPECTIVE : The Brothers and the Tree - A Fathers greatest legacy

in #philosophy7 years ago

I try to keep these concise but get comfy it's about 10-15 minutes reading xD

here is some music to help set the mood

Bigger, Harder, Faster, Stronger
four brothers are playing in their courtyard. They wrestle eachother and tease each other. "you're puny" says one brother to another. "your one to talk, I'm much stronger than you" interrupts his older brother, "yeah, but I'm heap's faster than you are!". Their friendly teasing turns to competition and they start to get a little upset with each other.

Their father see's this and laughs at their naivety though he wants to teach them a lesson so they understand

He tells them about the greatest tree and asks them to set out to see it, he says "you will each go when specified and tell me what you see, we will find the greatest tree"

The Journey

the youngest son is sent first, when he arrives at his tree it is full of life, covered in flowers and birds singing, he can see little gree sprouts shooting from all over the tree. he thinks "what a bountiful tree", doing his best to understand and sets back home.

the second son is sent out shortly after. When he reaches his tree he is awed by its grandeur, it's big and green =D
he understands it the best he could and sets home.

the third son sets out on his journey. When he arrives at his tree he see's a canopy decorated with an array of reds and yellows. With each movement of the gentle breeze he watches the red withering leaves drop off and gently dance to the floor. He tries his best to understand and sets home.

The oldest and the strongest, finally sets out on his journey,
he comes across the tree, barren and lifeless, sitting without a single leaf in the cold dead landscape, not a sound to be heard except for the snow crushing beneath his feet. "great..." he thinks to himself and having completed his journey he tries to understand it the best he could and sets home.

on his arrival their father gathers them around and asks them to each tell them about their tree

The Observation

HTML tutorial

he asks the youngest son to explain what he saw
the youngest boy explains the youth, bounty and life on the tree, he explains it how vibrant it was and the energy he could feel

he asks the second son to explain what he saw
he explains his tree as having strength, maturity and majesty, he mentions the soothing shade and how hot his journey was.

he asks the third son to explain what he saw
the third boy explains grace, beauty and an aura of wisdom, he tell's them how it decorates the area around it and covers the soil where he could see thousands of little creatures jumping and dancing

he asks the fourth and oldest son to explain what he saw
the eldest boy talks of weakness, death and decay. He explains he journeyed to a cold baron desolate place.

The Perspective

the brothers curious to know about the others journey start to question eachother about where they went and what they saw, each claiming their tree was the best

the old man sits his boys down and explains they had all seen the same tree.

their father explains that we see as little as we understand sometime's and without knowledge we may be misled by observation alone

We are like the tree, we have phases, sometimes we are "not ourselves", maybe havent had your morning coffee yet and still waking up or maybe something more severe like a sickness or serious event. Otherwise sometimes just like the tree reacting to the change of season we are sometimes affected by our environment. so how should we see it? how do we understand? how do we analyse our perspective?

Firstly, What do we even mean by perspective? The perspective we are talking about is probably pretty close to the second definition,

if we consider that the first one is intended usually in screens and drawing, its a way of "representing" an object so that it looks the same, especially in relation to everything else. Isn't that kind of what we are doing? though we are creating a visual image and attaching our own associations to it, we try to paint the picture as accurately as we can, dont we? isnt that similar to how each drawing can be different but not necessarily right or wrong, maybe just not "representing" everything(i.e what other people see/associate) interesting perspective! xD
