the glare...

Elephant seals are definitely one of my favourite species to interact with when I am guiding around the Antarctic region. Their large size, smell and curious nature tends to always mean an interesting encounters.


One reason for their intense stares when you are on shore near them is their lack of depth perception. Their eyes are more designed for seeing in an aquatic world and a very low light world. As a result, when they are in full daylight they have a hard time with depth preception. Hence their intense stares even if you are a really long way away from them. It can be a little intimidating though but amazing!
