Lost in Shibuya at night

in #photography3 years ago

Something I hardly see talked about when it comes to navigating an unfamiliar area is how frustrating detours due to construction can be. These are usually not taken into account on Google Maps, so you can't pretend you're in a game looking at the minimap and use your GPS to go from point A to point B. Combined with multi-level walkways, you can wind up going the wrong way quite easily, and retracing your steps is often very time consuming.

The area around Shibuya Station has exactly this problem. Of course, if you are just wandering around with no particular destination in mind, you can stick to the street level and avoid this issue. Here's the famous crossing, all lit up in the late evening, and still busy with activity despite the rain. I love the look of wet asphalt and the shimmering reflections of brakelights, so I took this picture with a particular focus on the street.

Anyway, assuming you actually want to get to a specific place, you might try to look up where to go...

The red parts here are the walkways. You can kind of tell where the ramps on and off are just based on their shapes, but the problem is that surrounding the station is a maze of construction barricades. Also, as an aside, I've heard a lot of people talk about how clean Japan is (and having also been to New York, I can say that the difference is striking), but there are unfortunately always discarded broken umbrellas on the city streets whenever it rains. Here is one lonely-looking abandoned umbrella I spotted from a walkway. RIP 🌂...

Also, notice those temporary white construction barriers. Here, they are just set up along the walls for safety, but there are often long passageways that are constructed from these barriers. I must have wandered around the station for twenty or thirty minutes before I finally found the walkway I needed to be on.

Where there was yet another sad discarded umbrella...

Why did I leave my apartment? Was it fun to go outside? Um... no comment... 😂

Sort:

haha, you can make a series of abandoned umbrellas.
Have a !BEER

There are so many!! I think it's because you can buy a new umbrella at any convenience store, so if your umbrella suddenly breaks due to the wind or something... there's no reason to hang onto it.
