The Thieving Woodpecker

in #photography6 years ago

I captured this beauty yesterday! I love Woodpeckers. (Even though one of them put a small hole in my siding. 🙄) They are just such pretty birds!

I’ve been trying to get some photos of Woodpeckers, Red Cardinals, and Blue Jays for a while now. It is actually quite hard. I swear they are all in cahoots with each other. If I creep towards any one of them, every bird in the area takes off.

Luckily, Woodpeckers have obnoxious chirps, so if my house is quiet, I can hear when one is out back. It still took patience, and some hours, to get all of these photos. I just left my camera by the back door, and every time I heard it, I tried to get a photo.

Most of these photos were taken from inside my house, looking out of the glass on my back door, as I was afraid I would scare it away if I opened it. I was surprised to see that they still turned out pretty decent! (A few of them were actually taken outside, after I noticed it had been sitting on the same limb for quite some time.)

It was a pretty great moment to capture it stealing some dog food from the porch. This is probably the reason it kept coming to the back yard.

Thanks for reading and looking!

Peace. Love. And Thieving Birds.

Great job! These are red-breasted woodpeckers. We have a few as well, but like yours, they fly away as soon as I even think of taking their photo! Also, I'm impressed by how clean your glass door must be! Haha!

Thanks! These are my favorite that I have seen so far. There is another kind of woodpecker around here, as well. I’m after it now. Loll! I’m obsessed.

I was actually just thinking the back door needed cleaned again, but after seeing these photos, and reading your comment, I would say I’m good for a while. ;) Hahaha!

Hahaha! I hope you can grab shots of the other ones. Are they smaller than these or larger?

It was smaller. I think it was a Pileated Woodpecker, but I can’t be sure. I hope I get a photo of it soon!

Pileated woodpeckers are really big and prefer old-growth forests. I've never seen one at a feeder, not to say that they won't. Maybe look up Downy Woodpecker?

It could have very well been a Downy. I do know that it wasn’t larger than the one in these photos. I haven’t seen another one yet. I hope I get to soon!

Cute photos! Thanks for sharing. I also love birds :)

Thank you! Birds are just so beautiful, and their chirping makes me happy. They are hard not to love. :)

I agree! I have feeders outside my window and love walking up to them.

These are some great shots 😍

Thank you!!!

Really loving your posts. That shot of the woodpecker steeling the dog food, PRICELESS!!!
