Black, white and blue are usually the dominant colours that you experience down in Antarctica with some yellow thrown in from time to time. However, every once in a while you get surprised by certain colours created usually by some of the algae and lichens that call this region home as well.
Snow algae begins to appear as the summer season progresses and the snow melts exposing the algae under neath a layer or two of snow/ice. The sun hits it and BOOM you have an explosion of red and green every where! It is a remarkable adaptation of survival this algae has evolved to exist in such an extreme environment. Also, I must say it does mean for some pretty amazing photographic opportunities too.
