Horizons: My First Attempt at Long Exposure Photography

Hello steemians!

I will be taking a break from my travel series and post this one instead. I will upload the second part of my part of Panay Island tour maybe later this week. Trust me, the formatting is really a struggle. Writing and photo editing only takes a fraction of the total time it takes to upload one post. The rest goes to formatting and making sure that everything is where they should be.

Isle View Beach Resort, formerly known as Aligarbes Beach Resort. Located in Puente, Carmen, Cebu is a rocky beach resort along a cliff. It gets too deep during high tide. [1.0 secs @ f/3.5, ISO 250, 15.0 mm]

For now, let me share with you my first attempt to long exposure photography. I hope you'll like it!

There's this rock a few meters from the shore which became the subject in most of my photos. [8.0 secs @ f/3.5, ISO 5000, 15.0 mm, With Flash]

About two weeks ago, I decided to go my organization's acceptance party. It was an overnight stay at Alegarbes Beach Resort in Carmen, Cebu. It was an opportunity for me to experiment with my camera because I will be awake throughout the night. I really don't have any idea what I'm doing. I'm just tinkering with my camera and save those photos that I think worked out fine.

Here are some of the photos I saved. Some are slightly edited using Lightroom, but most are just as is.

Isle View Beach Resort at Night:

The glow at the upper right of the photo is the sky above Metropolitan Cebu area. It's undeniable that the light of the city blocks the stars.

[30.0 secs @ f/3.5, ISO 5000, 15.0mm]

It's either my camera is not capable at low light or the night sky is still affected by the light pollution in the city even if we were 43 kilometers away. The photo on the upper left is without flash compared to the with flash on the right. Both showed specks of light which would have been very beautiful.

[30.0 secs @ f/3.5, ISO 1000, 15.0 mm]

This was pointed away from the city, but the lights from the neighboring resorts blocked the night sky.

I love that night. The sea was very still. Not even one wave can be seen. Also, there's no wind and the sky appeared to be darker than usual. It was also ominous. It appeared to be a calm before the storm.

Blue Hour:

The first title that came to my mind was Still because everything seems to be still and frozen in time, but I realized that most of the photos have horizon. As I searched about Horizons, I realized it should be a more fitting title, in my opinion.

LRM_EXPORT_198625192001454_20191021_091422170.jpeg
[1.0 secs @ f/3.5, ISO 200, 15.0 mm]

[5.0 secs @ f/3.5, ISO 250, 15.0 mm]

Horizon is the apparent line where the sky seems to meet the earth. There are two kinds: true horizon and visible horizon. True horizon is the theoretical line where the sky meets the sea. Visible horizon is the line where the sky meets the land.

After Blue Hour, there was a transition to Golden Hour. I only have two photos showing the transition maybe because it happened so fast.

Golden Hour:

[1/2.0 secs @ f/22.0, ISO 100, 15.0 mm]

I'm not really sure if it was already Golden Hour. I just noticed that the sky turned fiery red. The sea was still very calm.

[1/2.0 secs @ f/22.0, ISO 100, 15.0 mm]

But it happened so fast! The sky immediately changed back to the normal yellowish orange color.

[1/2.0 secs @ f/22.0, ISO 100, 15.0 mm] | [1.3 secs @ f/22.0, ISO 100, 15.0 mm]

Then the sun slowly rises from the east. This time, there's slight disturbance in the sea, but it's still generally calm. I really love the transitions because it's very rare to witness such kinds of events.

I guess that's all for my first attempt at long exposure photography. I loved everything about it even though I don't have an idea of what will be the outcome. I guess nature's just awesome to watch. Everything looks so still yet it's very dynamic.

Have a great week ahead!
