Fixing guitars with a shoe string Budget

in #pob9 days ago

I know I've not uploaded a video about guitars, or even written about them in a while. Truth is, with so many things on my plate, I'm having a hard time finding enough time for the shop. Also, truth be told, guitar sales are not precisely picking up at the moment, and the reasons are plentiful.

This one was fun, more so because I have to make do with having very little at my disposal. Also, my friend, has a shoe string budget, which of course can be fun, but only sometimes.

At any rate, it worked, and she's quite happy.

A controversial question for my musicians friends:

What do you think about Piezo pickups?

Some people really hate them, some people love them. In my view, they have their place, but I don't favor them over a more "tradish" pickup per se.

That said, adding a pot to the circuit, a 1 meg pot, allows me to more or less dial back that quack that makes Piezo pickups be hated by some guitarists.

A shop video, for a change. Maybe that's a good sign.

I'm not sure what other pickups are viable on acoustics to try and capture the real sound. The one in my Taylor seems pretty good and it has some screws on the bridge to let you adjust it that I've not messed with.

That is a small guitar and must be fiddly to work on inside.

I bought a bunch of piezos to try as drum triggers. They are really cheap and seem to work with the unit I have to trigger samples. I need to make up some more.

Magic. Actual magic. I know its all physics and vibrations and sound waves, but guitar repair is magic to me, who knows nothing about it. I've got two hanging on the wall above my piano, like my piano, they see little use, but they see even less use than the piano, which is not a lot.

I should use them and practice scales more often.

My real passion is making them, but repairing them can be fun. More so when you have to be very creative with what you got. I fix this week, for example, a bone nut using baking soda and CA glue. A chunk of the bone nut was missing, broken off... Instead of rebuilding the whole nut, I made a mold, so to speak, using tape. Filled it with baking soda, and dripped CA glue on it until it became a block of crystal. then shaped it, and polished it... looked like nothing happened.

Yeah. I'm on the "thradish" side.

My favorite guitar was a hollow body electric that had a humbucker in the neck position and a piezo pickup under the bridge, with a balance knob that let you pan between the two. Absolutely incredible sonic possibilities. The Yamaha AEX1000 (I think), and I really wish they would bring it back.

Every pickup has its uses, why choose? 😁

ha! good point... having both with a blend does sound like the best option for sure!

Isn't it funny seeing you here is this man your family 🤔 https://hive.blog/hive-124838/@oldsoulnewb/re-kgakakillerg-t2vylt
