BARIGA MARKET -An Appreciation Of Dignity In Labour

I was at the market with my mum last Monday and she asked me to sit and wait for her to get some things. As I sat there, I observed around and saw so much. I decided to write this piece. Have a look:

"Ejoor o!" she exclaimed.
Her tray of guguru and Epa in perfect balance on her head.
Squeezing through the little space just to make her way.
She passes by, but her shadow is soon replaced by the figure of one hawking banana and plantains.
Her tray, also in synchronous movement with her steps. Makes me wonder if life's troubles are for one's head, yet the burden bring forth pleasure.

Drops of water. Slicing of vegetables. The voices of market women, all screaming in persuasive voices "Come buy from me naw, customer."
These voices soon become inaudible as a result of the engines grinding in full power, almost as if it were a quarry engine, breaking stones for building. Alas it chews just tomatoes, soft and tender.
Red and green, orange, cream and brown.
Beautiful colours of nature.
Tomatoes, green leaves, carrots, peas, rice, garri, stock fish, peppers, beans and even drinks.
The market is beautiful, along with its necessary evils.
From the place of noise, and struggle, and stress,
Comes life's biggest needs.

Welcome to Bariga market
Where beauty comes from ashes
And sweetness from marshes.
Here lies one of life's biggest lessons:

"To enjoy sweetness, you must struggle through pain, sweat and noise".

Hey Joe.
Sorry to call you out unannounced, and like this.
But here's something I'd like you to see.
Its an exposé into one aspect of the Nigerian lifestyle, packed as a poem.
Hope you enjoy it.

Peace and Love✌
Emmanuel.
