Can you make changes to the blockchain code? You can't. Steem/Hive are mainly open source projects, but many solutions built around this are not. Hive has a community that has a lot of skills. If someone fork a hive/steem today it doesn't mean it stops being a shitcoin.

Great because Hive has most of projects what your talking about from the start. Most of them was already developed before the Hive. Hive engine (previous steem engine) Tipu, peakd, 3 speak, Dtube, blocktraders, ecency, hive press and many more.
And most of this projects was developed because when Steem starts there was a big investor and developer form start who already sell it to justin sun :P
Those projects who evolved around steem, simple migrated with hive when fork was done. Maybe the same programmers but working with big boost of money on the past .

Better popularity comes from better start. is as Facebook but in crypto world. everyone use facebook because everyone use facebook.
But the same as facebook, hive has rotten roots because of harmful mechanisms like downvotes.
Thats reason why so many users are on blurt even if is less developed and less funded.
And thats reason why is better on blurt and its worth to developing this blockchain.
Because when those difrences with funding gone, people wil be realize how hive was broken from the begining and simple leave it.
And i think thats why your devs and witnesess attacking this platform so much ;]
