Is life worth ending ?: Suicide is not a solution

in #psychology6 years ago (edited)

Hi steemians!!! Today I wish to discuss here an important issue that everyone should understand.Life is not an easy thing. we face many problems and difficulties in our life. Sometimes we get very depressed and we think "Things are not working for me.My life is over. what should i do now?".At that point of time people go into negative thoughts of commiting suicide.

Suicide is not a solution. We often read in news papers about suicides. Some students, software professionals, even school students killed or hung themselves due to so many reasons. Whatever may be the reason their life won’t come back. They should have thought of their families once.

Suicide is not a solution. Someone who thinks that suicide is permanent solution for a temporary problem, he is wrong. Over one million people commit suicide every year. According to a study made by the World Health Organization (WHO), it is estimated that suicide is the 13th leading cause of death. In India it is estimated that 2 lakh people commit suicide for various reasons. Police records say that it is a leading cause of death among teenagers and adults below the age of 35.

The rate of suicide is three to four times higher in men than in women. Over 10 to 20 million around the world people attempt suicide. Reasons for committing suicide: Suicide is often committed out of disappointment, distress and in few cases depression. Factors such as financial difficulties, conflicts with friends, colleagues, classmates and family members are also reason that prompt people to take this fatal decision.
In many cases, students who are excellent in academics end up committing suicide. The reason is fear of not being able to live up to people's expectations. They might miss their top position. Surprisingly the number of students committing suicide is more than the students who commit suicide for poor scores. There is also a different group of people who are very sensitive and highly emotional. Such people often feel that life is terrible. They start hating themselves. They jump to the conclusion that instead of bearing shame and guilt, it is better to end life. Since they fail to live up to the standards and expectations of the family, they commit suicide.

The seven major reasons for people to commit suicide are:

S - Stress
U - Unworthy feelings
I -Isolation and loneliness
C-Change in the lifestyle
I - Insults & humiliations
D - Depression
E-Emotional disturbances

The Solution

Counselling can help the people overcome suicide thoughts. It will focus on immediate difficulties and equip a person with problem solving skills. Counselling need not be a from professional -a close friend, parents, grandparents, teachers, preachers with problem-solving skills can also counsel, empathize and instil confidence.

When the feeling of suicide is intense, psychotherapy treatment at repeated intervals, is a good solution. The therapist listens patiently and allows the person to talk freely about the trouble. Since, the therapist doesn't interrogate, the person feels free to explain his problems.

The third technique is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), It's an interesting treatment where in the therapist will explore a practical and supportive way and make the person understand how negative thoughts lead to distress. CBT will help the person to think differently and convert his/her negative thoughts into positive ones.

Suicide is a serious thing. If u see someone suicidal u should help him and support him because everyone love themselves.

Symptoms of suicidal thoughts

A close friend can constantly watch and observe symptoms such as:

  1. The person tries to sit alone and think for long hours.
  2. Stops communicating with family members.
  3. Talks to friends in a philosophical way about life and success.
  4. Looks worried and is in a state of confusion.
  5. Keeps himself away from his favourite food and dress.
  6. Feelings of guilt can be seen on his face.
  7. They try to write last letters in their books.
  8. Donates expensive articles like cell phones, wrist watches to friends.
  9. Keeps browsing the net for information on suicides and its techniques.
  10. Sometimes pretends and try to convince people that he is happy.
  11. Keeps collecting sleeping pills and preserves then in the cupboards.

No one wants to commit suicide for the reason they want to die, they commit because they want to stop pain

How can family and friends help?
It is important for family members and friends to watch them day and night, because such people wait for an opportunity to commit suicide particularly at nights. Somebody should make it a point to be with such people, and not leave them alone.

Listen to them
The best solution is to listen without argument and convince them to listen to you too, which can make a real difference. The discussion may drive away any suicidal thoughts. Later, you can give suggestions as to how they can manage their difficulties. Explain then that failure is neither fine nor fatal.

Future is Bright
Convince them that they cannot change the past, but they can build a better future if they are willing to be positive. Advise them to read books, listen to CDs on personality development, watch interesting movies, preferably comedy. In Europe, psychologists advise their clients to watch Charlie Chaplin movies or other cartoon pictures to

According to American Association of Applied Psychologists when a person commits suicide, it may have a negative impact on that family for one generation. Therefore, we should support the subject to believe that there are no difficulties but only challenges .It is also interesting to note that when a person gets the idea of committing suicides, it is opined that the feeling may be there for about 24 hours. The person feels restlessness, and at such times friend can support him with soothing words.

We are living in the world where there are tons of opportunities to prove ourselves that we are successful. We should learn from failures and work hard. Then success comes our way.

Good and sensible post but easier said than done. Have you ever been in deep depression - show this post to such people. When you are the end of the tunnel with no light on the other side, suicidal tendencies tend to set in. Its a slow process - mind games I tell you. Sadly

thanks for commenting @bunnypunia . yeah, its not that easy to be done . My motive in here is to tell that there are ways to come out of that . I tried to express my thoughts about that.
