Started learning Python

in #python6 years ago (edited)

Few days ago i thought to myself that it would be a good idea to start learning some programming language.

Had no idea where to start or which one was a good starting point. So i browsed and browsed, watched some amazingly boring videos on youtube tech channels on that specific question.

Id write in the google search box: "How do you start learning a programming language?" and a few videos would pop up.

So i watched the first video and it was literally 12 minutes of drivel about how you need to be motivated and you need to practice and have a strong will and wash your teeth every evening before bed...

It was ridiculous. All i wanted to know is how do i start learning something. Whats a good book to pick up, are there any good online courses? What is a good programming language to start learning? Does it take long before you can write actual code?

I wanted to get to know all those practical questions and this dude is giving me a motivational speech.

And he was not the only one..

All in all it took me a few hours to find a good starting point.

Ran into a site called "Codecademy" that gives you a free 80 hour course for 7 days and after asks for something like 20$. Now we are all stingy when we have to pay for something but im pretty sure its worth it for a beginner.

There are a number courses on the site and i picked the "computer science path" (as it is called there) that teaches you Python in most part along with some required basic stuff about databases, git, itd....

One of the questions i had was instantly answered and what i love is how they throw you in their script.py and you start coding right away. Im now on my day 3 and i can say that i learned a bunch more then i thought i would.

Im maybe 10 hours in and i can solve some basic problems. I would probably be much further along if i dont stop and play with the code once i complete the task.

This is what it looks like

Now im pretty sure this is piece of cake, elementary school level of coding but it felt like a big deal to me. The whole path up to now (Im doing lists currently and they seem much easier then Boolean variables) has been really rewarding and i cant wait to jump back into it.

Hoping once im done ill have at least a basic knowledge of coding in python and move up to some other intermediate course. Who knows, maybe one day i might even be able to make a !pancakes bot... :D

Ill see you around...s

!
why did you choose to start with Python over other languages ?
Also, there’s an app called SoloLearn you might find useful.
Goodluck

It seemed most useful and ive heard people use it a lot. From data analysis to building AI.

SoloLearn is great when you have free time in the train or in the bus. Instead of playing a senseless game you can learn to program.
Python is an easy language to start. Have fun!

How I love this programming language, very easy to use and quite flexible :) :)
