How To Make A Quilt From Tiny Scraps

in #quilting5 years ago

I have a way for you to use the smallest scraps of cotton material to make an heirloom quilt! Almost nothing goes to waste!

Start with a left over strip piece of fabric, facing up. Lay scrap pieces of fabric face down, matching the top of the strip. Pin them close together, about a rotary cutting blade width apart.

Sew a quarter inch seam across the top and press the scrap pieces upward.

Cut them apart and trim. You now have your next set of scraps to sew to another strip of fabric the same way.

Soon you will start to see your blocks grow. Now is the time to decide if you want to really make them interesting by cutting them down. Cutting them down can be tricky, but just remember to keep any seams 5/8" apart.

Determine what size block you want. I have a 7 1/2" square block size. Extra strips make getting a block size easy.

For more detailed tips and instructions see my YouTube channel and search "crumb" for all my videos on this popular quilting technique. Here is a amazing amount of blocks I made with just a shoebox size tote full of scraps (there are even more off screen. It was over 50 blocks made! Imagine how many quilts you throw away by not using the tiny scraps!

I know someone who makes blocks out of her scraps and uses them to make a border around quilts etc. - she mostly uses the same colors so the blocks usually match. But making these wides stripes and cutting afterwards is an interesting idea, too.

Mm I have a few bits of old fabric which I have been looking to make into something, will be checking out the YouTube (have you thought about moving onto DTube?) as can't quite make it out from this description. Thanks 💯🐒

Some of my earlier videos are rough, but the shoebox crumb block series is very good. I show the bare basics in this blog post. Be prepared to make beautiful quilts with material as small as 5/8"!!

Thanks looked on Youtube kind looks ok to follow not a great stitcher to be honest but as I am currently resting my leg after an injury might have a bit more time on my hands. So i'll give it a crack 💯🐒

Some of my older videos have sound issues but you will get the infor by just watching. Hope you have a quick healing!
