in #retro6 years ago

The 1980's and 90's was the golden age of gaming, where many franchises and icons were born.

During this time period, many legendary games were made that are now not only considered classics but also gave birth to some of the most iconic names in the gaming industry. By the time the 90's rolled in and 3d games became mainstream, many games were taking advantage of hardware platforms like the PlayStation, N64 and the Sega Saturn were offering, giving gamers a much better experience.

So here are 5 of the best Retro Games from the 90's.

5 – Duke Nukem 3D.

"I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum."
If you ever wondered where this phrase came from, well, you do now. This is the type of game many fans of the franchise was hoping Duke Nukem Forever was going to be like, but unfortunately, that game was too little too late, so instead fans just went right back to playing this game instead.
Apart from the original Doom and Quake, Duke Nukem 3D is an iconic first person shooter game that is still enjoyed to this day by many gamers. Unlike its Doom counterpart, this game pushed the envelope on what was acceptable in games at the time, with profanity galore, memorable one liners, and more cursing than a witches book of curses. It was fast paced, enjoyable, it looked amazing and is considered to be the best Duke Nukem out of all of them.

4 – Mario Kart 64.

When Nintendo made the decision to place the Mario characters into a totally different genre, I bet they had no idea how successful it would become.
Although this is not the first game to have the Mario Kart title, it is by far the most loved among the fans. It took everything that made the first game awesome, and just built on that by converting it into the 3D realm and adding a few more assets while maintaining the essence of what players liked about the first game to begin with.
With new characters, a shit ton of new courses to play, more weapons and items, better visuals and awesome gameplay, it firmly put the game series on the map, and to this day, Nintendo are still making Mario Kart games every time they release a new platform with a few spin off's and special editions every now and then.

3 - Unreal Tournament.

This game redefined what an online first person shooter game should be, and it was amazingly good fun to play.
When it was released in 99, it blew players away and blew everything else out of the water with it next level graphics that had never been seen before on an online multiplayer game. Many PC gamers who had been to a LAN party would have had this game installed ready to go so they could play against there friends in the most epic game that was around. I remember many LAN parties, but I had a giant 23” CRT I had to drag with me, and I specifically bought a 3DFX Voodoo II Graphics card just so I could play this game. This game was the reason I got seriously interested in tech and PC's.
With fantastic visuals and awesome multiplayer gameplay, it remains one of the best PC games of all time.

2 – Resident Evil.

If you ever wanted to know which game started the whole Zombie craze of the late 90's and 00's, this is it.
This game took the horror survival genre to an all new level and gave us something that is not only enjoyable to play, but is also terrifying. That moment when you see the first zombie that is busy eating someone and then slowly turns his head round, then starts chasing you with his arms raised, and giving us that now iconic zombie moan... that scene right there is what enticed people to play the game even more. Although looking back on it now the voice acting was hilariously bad, but back then, we didn't mind, we were more interested in the action, the puzzles, the unique game mechanics and unique fixed cameras which added to the intensity of the game.
The game even received a whole new makeover with the HD version that was built from the ground up like modern games, but kept the story, puzzles and layout much the same, including that iconic cut scene that is now all the more realistic scary with HD graphics.
I even have plans to stream the HD version as I play all the games from 0 to 7 in chronological order as soon as my streaming PC is up and running.

1 – Metal Gear Solid.

It is a shame that Kojima is no longer part of Konami, but regardless of that, he still left a big imprint on the gaming world by giving us the very first cinematic game that felt more like an interactive movie, and creating a new genre that many other developers have tried to imitate but always coming up short.
Considered by most to be the best metal gear game by far, even above 3 and 4 which are also fantastic games in there own right. But for this game, it gave us many firsts, including that cinematic feel from the intro to the game that lists the voice actors, developers and such, the epic cut scenes, and that awesome narrative that captivated anyone who played the game.
It also gave us an iconic character, Snake who was originally voiced by David Hayter, has been the subject of many forum, message boards, magazines, social media outlets, you tube and more, with in depth analysis, comparing with other franchises and more.
The gameplay was beyond awesome, the graphics were on point but it was the story and action that kept its audiences captivated for so long, even to this day, gamers are still playing this game from start to finish, including myself. Just got past Sniper Wolf and being tortured by Ocelot.
The PC game will not work on modern hardware or OS, but there is a patch available that will make it work (which I am using), But emulators work just fine, unless you are one of the lucky few who still have a working PS1 and a Copy of the game. So if you have a PC, there is really no reason why you shouldn't be playing it.

There are so many games that were released during the 90's that could of easily made this list, but for me, these are the games that I remember the most from that era of gaming the most and enjoyed more than any other.
I did want to include GTA3 into the mix, but I remembered that it was released around the same time I got my second job as a mechanic in 2001 so unfortunately, I had to leave it out, but I am writing up a best games of the 2000's list for a future post and I know that GTA will be in there somewhere. If you want to know where... give us a follow and keep an eye out for it.

What games do you remember the most from the 90's?

Thanks for reading.

Thanks for this post, I knew Unreal Tourmament was old but I didn't kniw it was before 2000's... That's something!!

I agree with your list but don't you think it's biased towards shooters?

a little bit, but then again, they were the more popular titles back then.

Unreal Tournament
"This game was the reason I got seriously interested in tech and PC's.
With fantastic visuals and awesome multiplayer gameplay, it remains one of the best PC games of all time."
Amen.

It's still on my PC right now and it's still the best arena shooter with the best freakin OST ever! (I love a lot of games but UT99 is in my Top 3 of all-time with Warcraft 3 and The Witcher 3)

Duke Nukem 3D was among my first games and I loved that too.
Actually this quote ( "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum.") was first in a movie, They Live (1988). Well, it has a similar alien theme too. :)

Nice article, keep up the good work! :)

i never knew it was in a film first.... i genuinely thought it was in nukem first.... i suppose that's what happens when gaming is more important than watching films.

I was surprised too when I read about it for the first time like 2-3 years ago. :)

I've never played Unreal Tournament before, but now I see how impactful it is as a "genre-defining" (or as one of the games that did that) game. I wish I was there when it was still booming.

And reading this I feel so lucky to have experienced Metal Gear Solid, although I was beyond terrible at it.

One of my favourite games from the 90s is Metal Slug. Although I played it in the early 2000s, not in the 90s (so did MGS, and some other 90s favourites). It was a super fun game for me.

well im finishing up a 00's list that may get posted up later. still some greats that were made then, and still some genre defining ones too.

Gr8 list! I thought about playing Unreal Tournament last week.

Woot. cheers for the upvote guys. you Rock!

You have a minor grammatical mistake in the following sentence:

Considered by most to be the best metal gear game by far, even above 3 and 4 which are also fantastic games in there own right.
It should be their own instead of there own.

and are you surprised your rating is dropping? how many flags have you been receiving?
i know my grammar is bad, but to have a bot that is basically the grammar police? WTF? everybody hates em and it is very dumb having a bot. and for that reason, i will be flagging you ... so THERE!
