Lunchtime run: Go faster!

in #running7 years ago

I did another intervals run today. The temperature has dropped appreciably from recent weeks, but I was still sweating well by the end. I felt it went pretty well, but I didn't break any personal records this time. I felt I did speed up when I should although some sprints were uphill. It all gets the heart and lungs working.

On the way back I visited the outdoor gym which is just behind Stevenage swimming pool. Okay, so it's not as versatile as a proper gym, but it gives other parts of my body a workout. I know a lot of keen runners don't work so much on their upper bodies as they don't want to carry the extra muscle weight, but I'd rather have a better general physique.

Run

I'll try to do parkrun this week. There's one in Stevenage I could drive to.

I also try to balance running, core strength, and upper body strength training. Side planks are brutal!

Planks are perfect for the core, abdomen and lumbars reinforcement

I have a workout that includes some side planks. I may be old, but I don't want to be flabby :)

hahhahhah!

We have an outdoor gym near us too at the local leisure centre. I have never used it though or seen anyone using it properly. It is mainly just kids mucking about on the equipment!

I'm usually alone on this one. There was a guy on a bench with a can of beer :) There's another park nearby with various bars and stuff and I've seen some muscular young men working out there. Makes me feel a bit weedy.

Upper body reinforcement is essential for runners as well. You have to balance everything for improving. What is really not important for a runner is to oversize or hypertrophy your arms and biceps doing repetitions with enormous weights... but doing so with a light weights is important for improving body coordination and get a balanced structure.

I always do Core training, once a week at least.
Well done mate!

I'm probably never going to be super muscly, but I'd like to tone up a bit. It's all a compromise of time and results.

I think it is awesome that you have outdoor gyms like that. At the park my wife and I walk at they have things spread throughout the place like monkey bars and such. They are supposed to be challenges that you can accomplish as you walk around the track. Most of them have been there so long they look like they would collapse!

I like them to get some variety in my workout. There are some near home, but those are more basic. One thing I like about running is that it's free and this is a bonus

For sure! I am not really one to ever find myself in a gym, but to pay to go into one on top of that is just crazy! :)

good work ;-)

You might want o look into a thing called (something like) primal movement for your added gym work.

Instead of static stuff like planks you do movement stuff that really works a good range of muscles and helps with core strength and flexibility.

i'm only just dipping a toe into it at the moment. But it looks interesting.
