The Future of Artificial intelligence

in #science7 years ago

Artificial intelligence has a capability greater than any technology humanity has built in the past.

Artificial intelligence is growing for a multitude of reasons. The increasing ability of hardware is one. The cost of hardware is continuously decreasing while the performance is increasing. The performance is increasing exponentially. The number of transistors on a chip double roughly every 18 months, and will soon beat the human brain.

The Future of Production

As the abilities of artificial intelligence increase they will be able to manage production automatically. That will stop any need for humans to do any work to produce resources. We have automated factories today, they have been given the term “lights out”. (No lights are needed if there are no people.) These factories must be flexible and able to adjust to manufacturing changes, because rebuilding them completely would be a waste of resources. On top of that any failures in the production line may go unnoticed. So today many of these factories still require supervisors and regular maintenance. As AI gets better at solving problems less time will need to be spent monitoring it, until eventually none is needed at all. [1]

They will also take over the most dangerous jobs. One example is firefighters. They have a lot of flaws, like needing to breath, low heat tolerance, and getting hurt when heavy stuff falls on them. Robots could stay in the building rescuing people far past when it would be too dangerous for a fireman. We already have AI that can help direct firemen by giving them more information on how the fire is progressing and suggestions on where they should go and how they could work together. Other projects in development include humanoid walking robots. Other jobs, like welding, create a ton of toxic gasses. A robot would have no trouble doing this.[2]

All jobs will then shift to more intellectual pursuits. Science, mathematics, and the creation of even more advanced AI for example.

The Future of Artificial in our Daily Life

Artificial intelligence will have a major impact on our daily life as well. Transportation, for example, could be completely automated. This would save millions of hours of everyone's time. Another example is the planned physical, unstaffed, amazon stores. The goal is to make them able to charge you for what you take automatically, automatically resupply when stock runs low, and even re-order the store. Medical uses of AI will also have a major impact. The clothes you wear will be outfitted with sensors, for real time monitoring of your body. This can help prevent any ailments by by detecting them early.[3]

Sadly we have a way to go on many of these, especially the clothes. Many lines of them have major glitches and errors, which is bad if they serve a medical purpose. [4]

Other uses include entertainment and basic household tasks. Chatbots are becoming more and more intelligent, and eventually the best of them will be able to hold a full conversation. Many platforms, like slack, are actively investing tens of millions of dollars into chatbots alone. [5]

In the future artificial intellegence will dominate our lives, learning about it would be a good idea.

AI is an extremely interesting field if we can get it right. It's an amazing opportunity if seized but can also be a real threat.

Elon Musk raises some really serious concerns regarding AI:

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/03/elon-musk-billion-dollar-crusade-to-stop-ai-space-x/amp

Hopefully these can be overcome and we can fully exploit the potential of AI.

Great article, AI remains an immensely interesting field. I personally don't think that all jobs will eventually be replaced by AI, but definitely enough of them to create a lot of chaos if we're not well prepared.

I just wrote a post about AI myself, maybe you'll find it interesting?

As AI replace more and more jobs, we will see more platforms like steemit pop up. Unless money completely disappears, social media will probably be the main way people earn... and with the cost of production possibly going down due to automation, I don't think people will have to earn much to survive.

Money will have to completely disappear, it is unlikely an attention economy will work very well as everything gets automated.

That's true. I guess it will be more like the Star Trek economy. If the cost of everything is near zero... money would be useless.

that would only happen if the capitalist system is destroyed, capitalism needs artificial scarcity to function.

Nice post man.
It's highly underestimated even though we are much closer to achieving this than most people think.
Google has launched several open source projects using neural networks.

Right now, all of our social media is feeding into this neural networks and teaching them about us. A little creepy but fascinating nonetheless.

I dont believe that work will completely disappear, it will just take different form than today. Farming will be done with robots (already part of today's world) with an addition of cloud services to discover the best soil for the best plant. Watering will be done via a swarm of drones and so on. I can see future jobs in design of complex AI still :)

Upvote and following. Artificial intelligence and bots are definitely a future worth talking about. They will probably talk about it even here themselves soon, too.

Respect and resteem ;)

Good quality post! Upvote resteem, keep it up and steem on!
Do you have any experience in AI ?

not professionally, but I have built some and know people who do

You're so cool!
