As promised I told you about the affects of climate change on the environment and on various organisms, but I failed to get into the depth of climate change.
I wrote about how CO2 emissions heat up the atmosphere. CO2 or carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, it’s its job to heat the earth, but we’re emitting too much CO2 with our fossil-fuel (coal, peat, natural gas) and wood burning factories, deforestation, and our cars and planes. What needs to happen is that we have to convert to renewable energy like wind, sun, geothermal, and water sources so that we can stop emitting so much carbon dioxide.
Climate change isn’t caused by you alone but by the system we adopt. If we change to renewable energy, it shouldn’t affect you (you will still be expected to get to your work, heat your home, and feed your family). The reason there is so much climate change awareness is because we as the people of the world can change the world together. One or two people can’t do much, but if we had enough people speak out about our dependence on fossil-fuels then we can get rid of it.
There’s significant evidence that proves climate change is happening.
First of all, what are fossil fuels?
Fossil fuels are from the dead organic tissue rotting in the ground. You, me, and that other guy (what’s his name?), have lots of carbon inside us. After we die, our bodies decompose in the ground, and in hundreds of millions of years, the carbon in our bodies congeals into a hydrocarbon deposit, which is then made into fossil fuels.
What is Deforestation?
It’s exactly what it sounds. Forests are cut away on an enormous rate. Within a hundred years, the Rain Forest will be gone. Think of the Rain Forest has a huge converting factory of CO2 into O2 . (It’s actually the biggest converting factory.) So when we finally get rid of it, climate change would become worse. Much worse.
The Evidence
The last measurement of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was amount of CO2 was 401.58 ppm (parts per million). Since the Industrial Revolution, greenhouse gases have increased and it has increased every year.
Global temperature has risen. The global surface temperature is 0.75 ° C . I recall hearing about this in biology, part two (I had to take two courses to cover biology). We’re given a graph in class about the rising temperature. I recall distinctly that the teacher said that the rising earth’s temperature is human-made.
Because of the global temperature increasing, the ice sheets have melted. Because the ice sheets are melting, the sea-levels are rising. The ocean is also warming up. The last time the sea-level was measured, it was 66.91 mm. That’s a 3.24 mm rate of change each year.
Crazy weather is happening.
Ocean acidification is another byproduct of climate change. As the ocean absorbs CO2, its acidity gets lower (lower the pH the more acidic it is*). CO2 mixes with the ocean creating carbonic acid, which also makes bicarbonate ion and a hydronium ion making the water more acidic.
Coral reefs, which maintain 4,000 fish and 800 herd corals, bleach from the acid and eventually, can’t resist disease and death.
If you haven’t noticed climate change, you either don’t listen/watch news or don’t step outside. I live in a place that’s usually pretty cold out, but in November, for example,
it’s 60 ° C. That’s not right. I’m relatively safe from crazy weather, but because I live close to the beach, I’m more afraid of the rising sea level.
*On the pH (power of hydrogen) scale, a pH of 1 is highly acidic while a pH of 14 is highly basic.
