southers' Film Review: Ma (2019), Get Home Safe. American Psychological Horror Film

in #sct4 years ago

"Ma” is probably the most inspirational and realistic horror film I have seen this year. I have to say that the director Tate Taylor is just right for the description of the marginality. The film is quite versatile for Sue An, making this character more destined to be the protagonist than the high school students who are the protagonists. Based on the premise of the ugly character, an obesity, a slow, friendly but not stupid aunt appeared in this group of youthful invincible high school, unlike other adults who ruthlessly refused and rebuked them, she bought them for wine, and invited them to come to their residences to have party, and gradually revealed their unknown dark side.

Octavia Spencer has shown the multifaceted nature of this character, making it a disturbing charm. It is also sympathetic while doing evil. At this point, I appreciate the fact that the movie trailer is consistent with the actual plot. "Ma" does not show us many times that the market has been over-reversed. It does not rely on the strange ending as a selling point. Instead, it focuses on the role of the villain and supplemented by the protagonist group. The ending within the reasonable expectation echoes the famous quote of Heraclitus: "Character determines fate”.

In the beginning part of the film, after Sue and high school students met, the movie gave Sue An quite a lot of shots, showing that she used a variety of social software, such as FB, IG, LINE to peep at young people, and also let she traced the personal information of these young people. It turned out that some of the parents bullied her in the past, so the suspense is how the aunt’s revenge will be carried out. Do Sue An have a better way of disposal? For example, drinking, chatting? Whether at work or at a party, or in the process of monitoring young people, Sue An’s eyes are always incomprehensible. She is not a person who lives in the present, but a person who lives in past memories.

In contrast, from the very beginning, the film has different treatment of the disadvantaged groups, showing the current time and space background and the campus difference between the aunt and the young. The attitude is not so simple and bad in the past, but the Sue An's point of view is intertwined. We gradually understand this kind of unequalness based on identity. High school students have everything that young Sue An was eager to have. When the Sue An dresses up in the mirror, or prepares various shapes for the party, we see how hard she is trying to involve with them. Her efforts have been made to contaminate the beautiful qualities of these young people. Under the lighting and the rendering of the wine, the young people seem to accept her, accepting this very lively, kind aunt. However when the lights are off, the wine stops, everything is still away from he. She comes back being alone again and everything is an illusion.

My Score is 4.3/10
