Season Challenge: Trees Changing

Winter is still lingering in my neck of the woods and the cold temperatures showing up the odd day. Spring officially starts here tomorrow.

Trees against the evening sky. A scene in my backyard.

This part of the forest looks rather barren with the leaves gone for winter.

The fern are scattered around and their leaves stayed green all winter while sheltered in the forest.

A stream runs through the property.

This tree has some green moss climbing up it’s trunk. The moss does not harm the tree and kind of adds character.

A small tree with a huge growth. Makes me realize how susceptible trees are to many of human health issues.

Frilly fungi showing on this tree. Leaves and fir cones are scattered around, left from the fall but will eventually compost into the earth.

This time of year nature is starting to awaken. The grass will turn green, flowers will push up from the soil and the deciduous trees will blossom with a canopy of leaves to keep the land cool in the heat of summer.

That tree has a burr. We had a contest about the not long ago. The wood inside is prized for making fancy wood items because of the amazing grain! I found this one in our local park.

Wow! Amazing the tree is covered in so many burls or burrs (as called in England). Thanks for stopping by @old-guy-photos. 😊 🌳

that odd shaped bulbous thing?

it's called a Burl
Usually caused by an injury (lost branch, etc), insects, or fungus and the tree grows around and protects the injury or stressed part.
When it is cut, the grains and look inside is often amazing. Many fine woodworkers love finding Burlwood, and making some wonderful hand crafted piece from it.

Thanks for info @bluefinstudios. It’s on the property. I’ll have to see what I can do with it. 😊 although the most I have ever done with wood is make a walking stick.

if you did cut it, I bet slicing it across to make a bunch of discs
shand and polish then, stain them.

It would make a wonderful bunch of wood coasters, or wood cutting boards, if you seal the wood and stain with food safe sealer

Thanks for the great ideas. Cuttting board or coasters sound good. I will let you know ( make a post) if I can do anything with it. It’s certainly too big a burl for top of a walking stick. 😊

Exactly. I should have read your comment before I typed mine out lol!

that's ok....
... my goal on Steemit is to see how much angst I can cause, by being sneaky and reading minds then posting comments, before others can type!

LOL well played then :)

The sky in that first picture... WOW!!! I love seeing where you live Red. Looks like a sanctuary. Very beautiful and peaceful. 🖤🖤🖤

Totally agree, monch!

Haha! As long as it wasn’t the undeadpei.
It happens a lot that the autocorrect has a mind of it’s own.

I like the moss on the tree and the fungus... but that first shot of the sunset, wow! Just love it! :-)

Thanks Keith. Happy you loved the sunset. 😊

Such a beautiful and interesting post, my dear. Trees are an amazing topic and I could speak about them for hours. I really liked the one covered in moss...it looks like an old man with a huge beard. 🙂
Thank you for thid wonderful entry, Jo! I'm more than grateful for all this amazing support.
