My family and I went to a local gem show this weekend :). I do have an affinity for rocks, gemstones and geology in general, as my failed gold prospecting metal detecting trips often turn into rockhounding trips, lol.
The gem show was had a lot of kid-focused activities and was a lot of fun. We picked up some different gems and stones, and enjoyed checking out all the vendors. Here are a couple of pics:
One thing that really intrigued me was bonsai sized gemstone trees. I have never seen anything like this before, and, as an example, used petrified wood as the base, copper wire as the roots/trunk/branches and gemstones as the leaves - amazing!
I spoke with artist who says a big one can take about 80 hours, so quite the investment of time.
Overall, a great way to spend some time!

The kids corner looks very educational. It is really nice to see the difference between the raw and cut gems. The gemstone trees look really beautiful. I've seen a few videos about using copper wires for the trunk and branches, but I've never seen one where they used gemstones for the leaves. It looks so nice.
