Hi friends,
A while back, my friend @derekrichardson and I went out rockhounding and gem hunting. We were trying to find lapis lazuli, but came up short. However, Derek did know of a corundum spot and we found many:

Here you can see the corundum in the host rock and they glow in black light. The most famous version of corundum is red rubies, however, the they come in many different colors and are known as sapphire gemstones.
The ones we found found were purple and pink - they look great but I have one problem…. I can’t get them out of the host rock! The rock is very hard and dense, and I keep breaking off pieces of the sapphires when trying to get them out. My most successful method of extraction has been chipping around the gemstones, but it is very tedious and imprecise.
I may need professional help as I would love to cut some of them into jewelry pieces!
Thanks for coming by,
Brian
It is the second hardest substance in nature, that's why you had problem while getting them out.
Wow, those rocks look awesome. It's pretty cool how you can find raw rocks like these. Most of the things available here are already cut.
Cool stuff!!! I envy you!!!
Interesting, you seem to dapple in many cool things. 😎 👊
You have presented Neela gem very well. I think it is a famous gem. Thank you for sharing this with us. 🙏

The color of your rock is very different. In which different colors change in the light. Thank you sir.

Very cool. I used to follow a guy on YouTube who used a Dremel with a cutting wheel to get as close as he could. Then he would hold the smaller piece in locking tweezers and with a smaller grinding wheel extract just the gem stones.
Could be a good strategy! Lot of work, but sounds like it would work
They are so heavy that it is very difficult and sometimes impossible to carry them from one place to another. Its color is very attractive.
