I got this coin a couple years back and it's among the oldest coins I have. It's a 1 Ducaton from the West Friesland region of the old Dutch Republic (I think 😬).
I know almost nothing about non-US coins, except that there are some really cool ones.

As you might imagine, there are not many of these coins around so finding a comprable has not been easy.
I do know a guy that might know, but he lives in Spain now and might be too full of tapas, fresh seafood, and red wine to remember ;)
RIght in the middle of the reverse of this coin is a chop mark. Chop marks were used by merchants to verify the authenticity and value of a coin.
This is something I also do not really understand. How would they know, by tapping a small stamp into a coin, if it's legit?
I always think of @kerrislravenhill when I see a chop mark as she has shown some coins that are really marked up. Then I took a closer picture of the mark on this coin and it got me thinking...

Anyhow, if you have any info on this coin I'd surely appriciate learning more about it, and if it's legit.
I did buy it from a guy that is selling a collection of old coins that is definitely a legitimate collection so I tend to think this coin is real, but you just never know.
Well at least this coin had travelled to China. A minor chop on top of the arrows appears to me more like an X rather than a K as in the 'Headless Jolly Roger' the purported calling card of Teng Meng, aka The Red Dragon Lady that wields a ferocious Da Dow war sword in around the time of the Opium Wars.
A lot of corny Kung Fu sound effects were sometimes heard after nightfall near and around her residence but come morning nothing in on on the local streets except for one time a smashed fruit cart with a silver coin accompanied by apologetic note for the damage.

I don't know, looks real to me. Real or not, it's a nice looking coin! If his collection is genuine, this coin is likely also genuine. Have you done a "ping" test to see if it's real silver?
Have not done that test but it does pass the neodymium magnet test. I'll try the ping test now too though. Thanks for the video.

Did you test it to find out if it’s real silver first. If it’s not silver then it’s not real. That’s the very first thing to do brother.
Yeah forgot to mention that. It does pass the neodymium magnet test, but other then the nice ping it makes I don't have another way to test at home.

Joking aside, that mark is very big. I don't know much about this, but the coin looks a bit ugly with this, that's my humble opinion.

Hi. I checked and there are only a handfull of known false dukatons and those are VOC coins often copied in Sri Lanka and India for tourists with VOC trade makr on the coin. The copy the VOC 5 cents but not the DUkatons. As said only 3 known and bad copies.
The chopmark (!! nice) and the details I studied convince me that it is real.
The coin looks similar to other older Dukatons and the mintstrike was never really beautifull as they were made quickly as trade coins.
As for value : 200 to 400 for a Duakton and half for a half dukaton.
I am happy to sell it for you here in an auction!

I am serious but no guarantee. Maybe try on Ebay first yourself of else in the future I can use catawiki here in Europe. Most dukaton buyers will be in Netherlands I guess.
No guarantee ofcourse and 9% auction costs...(a reserve might be possible if they agree the coins is worth a couple of hundreds...
