Three Tune Tuesday is back again! It's always a tough day for me to choose what to share. New stuff, old stuff, or really old stuff... But today I am going with a band that I have loved since I was a kid, Dire Straits. They formed in London in 1977 by Mark Knopfler (vocals and lead guitar), David Knopfler (rhythm guitar and backing vocals , John Illsly (bass and backing vocals), and Pick Withers (drums.) They really wanted to create a different sound than punk that was big at the time and went with more of a jazz/ blues type of sound, and it was an amazing sound!
In 1978 they released a self titled album with the the single "Sultans Of Swing" which shot up the chart is both the US and the UK. It also happens to be my favorite song that they ever produced. Which is why it is first in my lineup today, here's a great live version:
They followed up with a couple more successful albums but really hit the charts hard when they released "Brothers In Arms" in 1985. The entire album is amazing and if you don't own it, it's definitely worth buying. The first big single off of the album was a song using Sting (from Police fame) in backing vocals. It's a song that is sang from a third person's perspective of the life of rock stars, "Money For Nothing". They also used some high tech animation for the time, amazing how much the world has progressed because that animation is prettty sad! Unfortunately todays version cuts out a verse that today is controversial, if you are old enough you will remember the part that is cut out. Revisionist history at it's finest once again......
Also from "Brothers In Arms" came another huge hit called "Walk Of Life". It's a fun song just to listen to:
After the success of the band became so big they really needed a break, and took a hiatus. They briefly hooked up again in the 90's but since then Mark Knopfler has shown no interest in reuniting the band. Maybe just because it became too big and he didn't want to go back to that lifestyle. One interesting fact about Mark is that he wrote the soundtrack for a little movie called "The Princess Bride".
I had always hoped they would at least come back together for their induction into the Rock Hall Of Fame, but not even that brought Mark back to the stage.

That is an interesting fact about The Princess Bride! I didn't know that. I have Brother's in Arms on vinyl and it is one of my prized albums. I always liked Sultans of Swing. There's that line about "a trumpet playing band" where I thought sure they were taking a dig at Chicago. I think songfacts.com denies that though.
I think he actually sings one o f the songs in film too! I have Brothers In Arms on vinyl too, also one of my prized possessions!
Oh, cool. I don't really remember much of the soundtrack from that movie, but I can probably quote most every line of dialog!
I guess you really took us to the 90s but yours is with a swag, seeing the way the guitar was rugged i really enjoyed the second song more
Apparently Mark Knopfler wanted the guitar to sound very processed and ran it through several filters to get that guitar sound just right. It's a great song, "Money For Nothing"
