Snowpocalypse!

Woke up this morning to 18+ inches of snow.

This is double the amount that it's ever snowed here in such a short amount of time, and we've been living here since 2021. Luckily the township handles it well, as I'm suddenly reminded of what it's like when it snows a lot in an area where it never snows; complete bedlam! Already the plow has come and gone and the salted roads are safe to drive on in even the most not-so snow-worthy vehicles. Not that I'm going anywhere but I guess it's nice to have the option, as this was probably the first time we've been properly snowed in and wouldn't have been able to leave if we wanted to.

I have receipts!

Before and after

Some of these snow piles are taller than the cars and you basically have to dig them by hand because of the parking lot style situation we've got going here. I was out there for over an hour just digging out muh car, which I didn't mind I actually like the snow and might as well get some exercise today anyway. Luckily the plow does most of the actual work. I just threw a lot of mine into the street knowing it would be taken care of.

It was actually kind of nice because it was somewhat of a community moment when I was out there. Everyone saying stuff like, "this is crazy," as we all hurriedly try to free our cars from the trenches. Everyone in this household can work from home so it's not too bad. Seriously wondering what it's like for people who need to be somewhere on time during a kerfuffle like this. Must be beyond annoying.

Funny thing is that a lot of the places around where I live get a lot more snow than us. Rochester is 4 hours away and we frequent that city quite a bit. The "lake effect" they get can shower the entire town with like 3 feet in a day, which is obviously insane and a lot more than this. Apparently the wind can just bounce off the lake (Great Lakes) and create this crazy sideways snow. I guess I have more respect for those who have to deal with this level of powder. I like the snow but enjoy the small amount we usually receive.

As a child living in California I always considered it strange that there was no snow. You learn about the seasons. The "winter" slide always shows snow, and yet there was no snow to be found unless you drove a couple hours into the mountains. I always thought it was weird that the temperature could constantly go below freezing but it would never snow. Of course that's because once you get some cloud coverage the insulation kicks in and temp goes back up.

In any case it's been a particularly harsher winter than previous years. Don't know if I'll get used to the thermometer in the car reading zero degrees Fahrenheit. "Real feel" wind in the negatives is pretty bone chilling to be sure.

The End

Not much else to yammer about concerning this topic.
Just trying to jump back into the bloggin game.
Much rust.

Sort:

Nice. We've got some in here this winter but not as much as I would have liked to. I prefer snow than freezing cold days. I hope those are gone for the year.

Glad to hear your survived it. I don't feel like we get as much snow as we used to here in Michigan. The west side of the state gets the heavy lake effect stuff, but the east side where I live only gets that sort of thing if the wind shifts counter to the jetstream. I feel like a lot of the crazy winter weather has started to push down south. We get more days with the feels like temperature in the -20's to -30's than we get snow.

I didn't know you were a fellow Michigander. Sort of weird when the last few years we missed a lot of hits, as you say, went down south out around us, but when temps hit -20 without snow, it's like something is missing in the picture when you walk outside and just feel extreme cold and barren trees, the landscape looks dull.

Yep, all my life. It's a pretty great state. I feel like when I was a kid I used to get a lot more snow. Maybe it's just a perspective thing. The Saginaw Bay seems to be an insulator, we don't get hammered like the west side of the state does.

-30 yikes

Yeah, lower than -20 they close school. They clocked -54 in Ironwood, MI last weekend I think.

Gotta turn up your brown fat man! With the temps hovering at this, I can go outside in a long sleeve and hoodie with a hat and be good. At the beginning of winter, that would have been a miserable thought lol

Getting snowed in is fun, and you get to take some awesome photos.

Like some that were coming out of Marquette in the UP here, as early as December they were already walking down a business district with snow banks so high on the sidewalks it looked like people were walking through tunnel walks. About three weeks ago people were posting pics on FB of piles so high they covered highway directional signs.

Well ya the upper peninsula is a different world in terms of snow! I don't doubt it, that area is comparable to Rochester NY in terms of how much snow y'all get dumped on. Pretty crazy!

We just had Australia day, and it was Adelaide's hottest on record. One town got to 49.5C, almost broke the big 50C (122F). Didn't fall below 94F overnight, so plenty of fans on. I switched the aircon off overnight, as electricity is expensive and the solar's no help. Kids' first day back at school after the Christmas break, I miss them already.

I'm hoping to get out to Mt Buller in country Victoria this Winter, probably August; do a bit of skiing. We have to travel to our snow, it doesn't come to us. My daughter will be 11 and it'll be her first time in the snow, looking forward to that :)

I gotta say that I love seeing snowy scenery, but when the "photo" gets too freezing... It ruins the magic of the moment.

Stay safe, @edicted.

WOW that is a lot of snow for one night!
I do love snow. We don't get much of it where I live. A sea climate we have.
This winter we got some snow, stayed on the street for a week before it evoporated back into the air.
Maybe we're getting again a bit. North and North Eastern wind, which essentially means, colder and hopefully snow.
Good fortune for me is - like you and your household - work can be done from home, no need to drive into some office.

There's a quaint little town in the UP that sits off Lake Superior, earlier tonight I was reading down a list of how many inches various places have gotten, and they were up to 154 point something inches, that's like triple what we've gotten off lake effect from Lake Michigan. The lake shore has been hit harder than we have more inland, but this is the first year in quite a few that I think I've had to shovel more than ten times. Like Bozz was saying, it seems it has moved further south in the last few years and we've avoided having a lot of snow.

Is this part of Hive still alive?

hey man :) you still active?

what do you think about this: ?
https://peakd.com/hive-167922/@woelfchen/broken-hbd-peg

Struggling to make posts but still around.

Big problem with HBD is that it has zero [liquid] exchange listings and all arbitrage is done through the conversion mechanic. 3 days to convert is a long time when the market can swing like it is. It often looks like there's an arb opportunity but it comes at high risk of failure. The more the peg is broken the more the risk is worth it.

Good to see you still around :)

  • Do you think decreasing the conversion time could be a away?

  • What do you think of hbdstabilizer?
I see it as kind of emergency solution and would rather see some more organic community using the mechanisms.. which brings me to:

  • My biggest problem is, that it is not being advertised.. especially to traders.

People complain about problems with stablecoins but just keep centralising and therefore pushing the underlying premises for the problems they are complaining about. they now talk about pegging it to something else (what??) but the peg is not even the real problem..

  • And even if I try advertising our solution by myself.. my effort is either completely ignored all together.. or even worse.. HBD and me are being pushed into bad light and compared with Terra Luna..
What do you think about that?

I then can only say it is still working.. compared to Terra Luna. And tell them about incentives and the mechanism again, exactly as you just told me..
And they just reply with "it works until it doesn't" then.. - great! same with fucking everything! Also usdt, usdc, just paper dollar..!

Decreasing the conversion time increases the systemic risk of complete collapse.
I think it's been talked about before but lowering it less than 24 hours in basically impossible from that perspective. That ties into the "it works until it doesn't" idea. The way conversions operate ensure that it will keep working when considering the haircut and the fact that it can depeg on purpose.

Yes it would be great if we had more organic usage and more market makers than just the stabilizer. But we... don't. If HBD had exchange listings we'd have plenty of market makers automatically maintaining the peg. It's kind of like that saying: "When your rich everything comes free." A network like Hive struggles a lot because it's small and doesn't have a ton of network effect. The HBD problem gets fixed automatically if Hive just gets more adoption in general... which can be accomplished in a lot of different ways [in theory].

Hmm maybe we also face other problems already, also close to a systemic collapse with these witnesses circlejerking and extracting for too long risking that their nodes ain't economical anymore.

I don't expect them to run their nodes altruistically and that was also not the design of this chain.

But it appears that the greed has destroyed themselves.

It will be very interesting if this chain can survive until next bull market.

I should have also powered down and paid out. Especially because I really need money to survive. But I was too loyal and only powered down and paid out once, when I was homeless and struggling to survive. I never was rewarded according to that. While the biggest permanent power-down and paying out people got dozens of HBD on their generic posts..

Maybe this platform has truly earned its self destruction.

And sadly at a time in internet history where we really actually need something like hive.

Thank you for your great replies, as always.
