Social Media and Food Pictures

in #social2 years ago

Almost everybody I talk to seems to think that taking pictures of food and sharing them on social media is a self-obsessed/vain thing to do. This has always confused me. When you look at the motivations for taking/sharing a picture, they are: to capture the qualities of something (physical or otherwise); to convey an emotion or experience to a group who could not otherwise feel it or because the subject is particularly visually appealing. Think then of an average restaurant-goer "snapping" their food. It is, as food tends to be, visually appealing. It does present the experience at a certain restaurant. It will document the food that they ate on that day.

I can not envision a situation where stopping to take a picture of the meal detracts from the dining experience.

Ultimately what could make a more worthy subject for photography than food? A beautiful vista may go unchanged for twenty years but an excellent dish could hardly last as many minutes.
