Do you know what they tell everyone on the plane when the emergency air masks drop??? They say to put the mask on yourself first then anybody else after. Why do you think they say this??? You cannot help anybody if you end up needing help yourself. I know this is not cut and dry for every situation and people will guilt you by saying you are selfish while they themselves will not lift a finger …
Bad example. On paper. A person is drowning in the water. Society says jump in the water and try to save him. Cut and dry without adding more variables it is sound advice.
Reality is not so simple …
- Can you swim???
- Is the water safe??? It could be rushing river water. It could be big waves at the beach.
Not taking into account these two variables and just jumping in the water only to find you are in the same situation drowning. If you survive you will hear the same idiots taunting you to jump in change their tune to oh you are dumb for jumping in the first place.
It is a balance to know how much to help others and how much to step away and help yourself. You are not a saint so do not try to be.
If there are people with super powers similar to the comics I would not be surprised they do not become super heroes. No matter what you do people will not appreciate you for your sacrifice.
Bad example. Look how the first world countries treat the police, firefighters, soldiers, and many more in similar fields. Yes it is not everyone but I would not be surprised if it end up being 25% of the population that hates them …
