5 Totally Weird Things in Society That We Think are Normal

in #society8 years ago (edited)

As a society, we all take part in different costoms, activities and behavioural tendencies we think are completely normal without batting an eye depending where we're from.

Some of these things, seen from the outside can seem really - really weird.

1.Targeted Advertising

It's seriously everywhere. Pretty much all mediums of information have it.

It is normal - advertising makes things flow, it keeps companies in business and introduces people to products they need.

It's still weird.

Some advertising can work like this:

Doesn't that look kind of manipulative? It at least looks like information most people would like to have private from big companies - before they sell it to someone else.

2. Clapping

If you really think about it - clapping is strange.

A group of people slaps their hands together over and over for a period of time to show they enjoyed something.

Depending on how deserving someone is of a round of applause - the audience will stand up.

I was looking for the origin of "applause" and it seems like it's something people have been doing  forever:

The ancient Romans had a set rituals at public performances to express degrees of approval: snapping the finger and thumb, clapping with the flat or hollow palm, and waving the flap of the toga.
Similarly, a claque (French for "clapping") was an organized body of professional applauders in French theatres and opera houses who were paid by the performer(s) to create the illusion of an increased level of approval by the audience.

Maybe clapping when you enjoy something's just natural for human beings.

It's also... still weird.

3. Stalls in bathrooms with a gap between the door and frame

I've heard that not all places have this problem - but a lot of public bathrooms in North America are like this.

It's something I don't really think about any more. I can imagine if someone was used to stalls that don't have gaps, they'd think its odd.

4. Useless applications wanting your location or other irrelevant information

I'm not even explaining why this one is odd.

Like most things, I'm sure there's a legitimate reason - the app needs to latch on to that function of your device to physically operate, or correctly work in some way with some database somewhere.

But - come on. Who else thinks Candy Crush or Angry Birds don't need to know where you live?

5. Today's young kids will have their whole lives being filmed

Being in my twenties, about half my life has been documented in different ways on social media - but I remember all of those memories.

Sure, I have pictures in albums and old video tapes of my family on Christmas from my very early childhood. It's really nowhere near what children born in the last 5 years will have though.

It's just kind of weird to think that a 2 year old - in 30 years can know exactly what they were doing on January 26th, 2016 by a picture online.
