SOCIOLOGY: The Different Agonies of Being a Prostitute

The Living Agony of Prostitutes

Whether it is institutionalized or an underground activity, prostitution serves mainly as a source of income for some of women in the world. It has dramatically become in-demand in select countries. Advertising companies even promote such business. Prostitution specialists travel around the world to hook up women for some sex recordings and sell the videos after. They have even penetrated some of conservative countries.

Porn sites have increased in numbers, and they are being promoted in the internet as pop-ups sponsored by many of the most visited websites in the world. Women prostitutes are becoming young at age throughout the year to the extent that there are already as young as 12 to 15 years old girl teenagers who engage in sexual activities just for money, and some choose it just for fun.

Men are not exempted from the business. Their growing numbers are a manifestation of the booming condition of prostitution around the world. It includes gays who tape themselves having sex with each other and with the other straight guys. There is a portion of most of the porn sites for gays as well as exclusive porn sites for gays and men bisexuals. The LGBT community with the gays as the most active in the business sees it as an opportunity out of the feeling of no sexual freedom in the society.

However, as anyone can surely be aware of, it violates moral standards. Prostitution always gets in conflict with the churches and women organizations. There may be governments that have already legalized prostitution, but it does not justify morality for most of the people.

Nonetheless, the concern of the article is for the situations and the life experiences of the prostitutes. Prostitutes do suffer the following things:

Losers

Many people think that the prostitutes are the people who failed to obtain clean jobs, and they went to the business to survive. Prostitutes justify their job as a profession, not just a one night stand income generating activity. However, they are being portrayed as losers in the society such that prostitution is their helping hand. With this negative labeling, they are being threatened by sex maniacs as sex toys just because they are easy to be asked for sex in exchange of a pleasurable price. They have been treated as below humans. They become materials -- sex materials to be specific.

Poverty Problem in Poor Countries

In the case of the Philippines, prostitution is not allowed but it is very rampant such as buying call boys and call girls on streets, schools, and at the bar publicly. They are even paid at lesser prices just to have something to eat on a daily basis. Most of the prostitutes are minors. Their parents cannot afford to provide good living for them, so they went underground.

Moreover, due to the minor age, they are still not able to get jobs because the state policies do not allow people aged below 18 to have corporate work. Also for young adult prostitutes, the backwardness of educational attainment blocks them to obtain proper jobs, causing them to find alternatives like, if not dealing with drugs, prostitution.

Vulnerability to Drug Use

Most of the prostitutes have also tried smoking "meth" or marijuana. The drugs boost their confidence and energy during sexual activities, and eventually they have turned to be drug dependent. Also, most of the drugs come with the money paid to the prostitutes. Underground prostitution also sells drugs and some of them give their sex actors and actresses drugs for free. Data taken from the GABRIELA Party list in the Philippines show that an increase of drug tolerance on women take its source from prostitution.

The organization also added statement that while women prostitutes are only forced and do not like at all what they are doing, the drugs serve them as an anesthesia just to survive a particular sexual session. This case also applies to straight men who get to have sex with gays for money.

The "Dirty" Brand

When a guy has a feeling for a certain lady. He probably thinks that the girl is clean, but when he learns that the girl is a prostitute, he will instantly rethink of whether he will pursue his intimate interest or not. Basically, the society brands the prostitutes as similar to a dirty bread that everyone must not eat. To choose between a clean and dirty bread, people literally choose the clean one. The situation is the same with the relationship preference. Of course, the case is not applicable in all societies, but it is a fact that a particular person would usually think once again when he or she knows that someone else is a prostitute.

The Model of Immorality

Another branding of the prostitutes are the people who promote immorality in the society. They are usually taken away from children and formal people. They are being isolated from many places and segregated in specific areas. Even though they attempt to help in a charity, this branding always remains. They are always made an example of the type of people children should not follow.

This is a form of discrimination that even prostitutes in societies that allow prostitution suffer from. Regardless of the different concepts of morality people define it, prostitution is still treated like a dirty bread one should not eat.

Just as much as prostitution becomes popular nowadays is the popularity of the prostitutes, but in negative ways. First is because they are famous as sex toys, not prestigious people. Secondly, they are thought as easy people -- easy to be exploited and manipulated. Third one is that they cannot smile genuinely towards all the people because they have always in their minds that these people have a tendency to badmouth against them with or without their presence.

Fourth thing is that they are already deprived of their human rights such that they are already exploited by flesh. The fifth one would be the feeling of self-pity that they usually feel even though they try to get out of the darkness brought by prostitution. Sixth one is that, in general, they do not feel safe around the people, just because they know that these people will always have something to say about or against them.

Lastly, they will probably fear that time will come that they will be hated by their sons and daughters in the future due to bullying at schools because of the prostitute parents.

So what's the problem? Quit from there. And go to work in a garment factory!

I know what you mean. The salary that they can earn working in a factor is too little compared to what they are earning but at least its a decent job. I'm not condemning them because I've never been in their shoes and I never had the idea of how they really felt.

So, do you feel that prostitutes should have more rights and respect in our society?

Not that much respect because we know that what they are doing is not good and is against the law of God but at least we can just be considerate a bit because not all of them like what they are doing.

I absolutely understand your point. This is a very interesting article and a fresh take. Thank you for writing.

law of God ?intresting point if we think about wath work did MariaMagdalena :)

I heard about maria magdalena. What I do not know is if its true. Is it true? Can you tell me more about it?

I do. It is so easy for another human to cast judgement, stripped of all context. If all that judgmental energy was put towards positive endeavors, who knows, we could have conquered space, cancer, and terminating telomeres - aging.
