Es casi un personaje literario el protagonista de los inmortales, diálogos platónicos era viejo y por ellos la imaginación occidental representa siempre a Sócrates anciano, era por entonces, pobre, testarudo e irritante capaz de convencer a un héroe de la guerra, por aquellos tiempos, su ciudad, Atenas, de la que presumía no haber salido jamás, si no era por razones de fuerza mayor, como en el caso de una guerra, hijo del escultor Sofroniso y de la comadrona Fenareta, Sócrates aprendió del oficio de su madre, el arte de dar a luz las ideas que el hombre lleva en su interior, a través del examen y del diálogo, su profunda honestidad y la coherencia de su pensamiento le granjearon la admiración de sus discípulos, entre ellos el célebre Platón.
